Rare’s Canceled Xbox Title Everwild Finally Seen In Leaked Screenshots

Earlier this year, Xbox made significant changes internally, leading to the cancellation of several projects, layoffs for many employees, and the closure of at least one development studio. One of the projects canceled was Everwild, a fantasy game that had a difficult and ultimately unsuccessful development process.

When the game was canceled, only two trailers had been released, and very little was known about it beyond those brief, intriguing glimpses. It seemed like we’d never learn much else. However, screenshots from early versions of the game have now appeared online, finally giving fans a look at what could have been.

Screenshots recently shared by MP1st appear to be from an early, almost-canceled version of the game. They were posted by an artist who previously worked on the project at Rare. The images show the game’s distinctive cartoon-like art style, and glimpses of the menus and interface, suggesting it involved farming and survival elements.

Screenshots of Rare’s canceled game, Everwild, have leaked online. The images appear to be from a fairly recent build, likely taken shortly before Microsoft decided to cancel the project. The game’s interface bears a resemblance to modern Zelda titles, though…

A recent look at an early version of Everwild revealed a menu system organized into tools, seeds, and something called “figments.” Figments seem to be deployable creatures that come in different varieties, likely used as consumable items. The tool section suggests players will have regular access to items, possibly for activities like farming. Reports indicate the game was being developed as a third-person experience, blending elements of god games and survival titles.

A second screenshot displays a more polished and visually appealing version of the menu. This one includes tabs suggesting additional items players can use, like mosaics and plants, in addition to tools, figments, and seeds. One screenshot even reveals a humorous description for a shrub seed, playfully questioning the player’s smarts.

Leaked images reveal some of the environments planned for Everwild. According to the website where the images appeared, the developers at Rare intended to use data gathered from their popular game, Sea of Thieves, to help shape Everwild’s settings, though details on how this would have worked aren’t available.

The few screenshots released mostly show bits and pieces of the game’s world, but don’t reveal much detail. One image appears to show the player character standing in front of a building shrouded in fog, while another offers a hazy view of a forest. Even though these images are likely from an early version of the game, Everwild still managed to capture the beautiful, natural feel seen in its trailers.

It looks like these screenshots might be the only glimpse we get of Everwild for quite a while. Even so, I’m happy we had a chance to see it, and now people can at least picture what this canceled game could have been.
