Warning: This article contains major spoilers for Peacemaker Season 2, Episode 8
The season two finale sparked a lot of debate among fans, and many wonder if a surprise appearance by a well-known Marvel character could have improved it. According to reports, the director considered including such a cameo and even discussed the idea with Marvel Studios.
Season two of *Peacemaker* has been quite a ride, largely focused on a bizarre story involving Nazis and alternate universes. Like many streaming shows, the season’s main storyline concluded in episode seven, leaving the final episode to tie up minor plot points and hint at a potential Season 3 – though it’s currently uncertain if the show will be renewed.
In the episode “Full Nelson,” James Gunn explained why Rick Flag Sr. was so focused on the multiversal doorways Peacemaker had been using. After sending Harcourt and others through several frightening dimensions, the team discovered one that looked and felt remarkably like Earth. Before this, Gunn hinted that another of the doorways could have led to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, potentially even bringing in Deadpool.
I really wanted a scene where the door would open and reveal Deadpool. I discussed it with Ryan Reynolds, and it would have taken a lot of effort to make happen. He was on board with the idea, and honestly, that’s all anyone will be talking about now – Deadpool being in that other room.
Although a Deadpool appearance didn’t pan out – it would have been very complicated to arrange – the show’s finale has sparked a lot of debate among fans. A major point of contention is that James Gunn doesn’t seem to have any immediate plans to resolve the ending’s cliffhanger.
‘Peacemaker’ is Now Trapped in an Alternate Universe – Again
HBO Max
Near the end of the episode, Peacemaker and his team officially become Checkmate, though the details of how this happens are a bit unclear – Sasha Bordeaux and Langston Fleury simply leave their jobs at A.R.G.U.S. to join the group. Just when things seem to be looking up, Peacemaker is suddenly kidnapped by Rick Flag Sr. and launched into a distant part of space he calls “Salvation.” Flag intends to use this place, with help from Lex Luthor, as a prison for people with superpowers.
Although everything points towards the 2027 film *Man of Tomorrow* and James Gunn has mentioned characters from *Peacemaker* appearing in future DC projects, *Peacemaker* Season 3 isn’t currently being planned, according to *Deadline*. This means the show’s cliffhanger ending and what happens to Christopher Smith might not be resolved. However, Gunn did hint there’s still a small chance for more to come.
Just because the show is ending doesn’t rule out the possibility of it returning in the future. I’m not saying it’s impossible, but for now, the focus is on what’s next for the DC Universe, and this character plays a key role in those plans.
There’s a chance the upcoming *Man of Tomorrow* story will revisit the metahuman prison from *The Suicide Squad*, potentially resolving Peacemaker’s storyline. However, if that happens and feels hurried or dismissive, it would be a disappointment. *Peacemaker* was a huge hit on HBO Max, consistently topping the charts, so it would be a misstep if the cliffhanger ending just leads to a brief mention in another project – it might indicate a misunderstanding of what fans enjoyed about the series.
