Disney+ is heading in a new direction following the announcement of when the second season of Ahsoka will be released. The first season of the live-action Star Wars show, which came out in 2023, followed Ahsoka Tano (played by Rosario Dawson) and Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo) as they searched for the possibly returning Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen).
Long breaks between seasons are now typical for streaming shows, but the wait for Ahsoka season 2 has been especially lengthy. Fans have been anticipating the next chapter for around three years, eager to find out what happens with Ahsoka, Sabine, Thrawn, Hera Syndulla (played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Ezra Bridger (played by Eman Esfandi), Shin Hati (played by Ivanna Sakhno), and Baylan Skoll. Sadly, the actor originally cast as Baylan Skoll, Ray Stevenson, passed away, and the role has been recast with Rory McCann.
Originally planned for 2026, the second season of Ahsoka will now premiere in early 2027. Since Disney+ doesn’t have any other live-action Star Wars series currently in the works or scheduled for release soon, this delay marks a significant pause for fans of the franchise on the streaming service.
2026 Is Disney+’s First Year Without New Live-Action Star Wars TV
Since its launch in November 2019, Disney+ has released at least one new season of a live-action Star Wars series every year. This includes The Mandalorian (seasons 1-3), The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor (seasons 1 & 2), Ahsoka, The Acolyte, and Skeleton Crew.
Fans anticipated that Ahsoka season 2 would follow the pattern of new live-action Star Wars shows being released annually, even if it was just a single episode, like The Book of Boba Fett which debuted on December 29, 2021. However, with Ahsoka now scheduled to premiere in early 2027, 2026 will be the first year since Disney+ launched that no new live-action Star Wars television series will be released.
Disney+ will continue its tradition of releasing new animated Star Wars series in 2026, with both the popular Maul — Shadow Lord season 1 and the upcoming Visions Presents — The Ninth Jedi on the way. This follows a pattern established since 2020, when shows like The Clone Wars, The Bad Batch, Star Wars: Visions, the Tales anthologies, and LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy all launched new seasons each year, complementing the live-action Star Wars content.
Star Wars & Disney+ Still Need New Live-Action TV
With The Mandalorian and Grogu heading to movie theaters on May 22nd, and Starfighter planned for 2027, Star Wars is gradually returning to a focus on theatrical releases alongside streaming. Although movies are a core part of the Star Wars experience, live-action TV series remain important for both the franchise and Disney+.
Over the last seven years, live-action TV series have been the main driver of the franchise’s success, keeping it popular even without new movies. Shows like The Mandalorian and Andor have been particularly impactful, attracting both dedicated Star Wars fans and new viewers. The Mandalorian quickly became a cultural phenomenon, and the critically acclaimed Andor has been praised as a standout series of recent years.
One of the biggest reasons people signed up for Disney+ when it launched was to watch The Mandalorian, the first-ever live-action Star Wars show. Even though not every series that followed was a hit, these releases were still crucial for Disney+, because the streaming service was the only place to see new live-action Star Wars content.
While shows like Maul – Shadow Lord are great, they don’t reach as many viewers as live-action series like Ahsoka. To keep the Star Wars franchise popular and maintain Disney+’s success, it’s important that Disney+ continues to create and release new live-action Star Wars stories. This is vital for keeping subscribers, as the streamer relies on Star Wars as a major draw and a key reason people signed up in the first place.
