Popeye Slasher Horror Film Officially Kicks Off Production on ‘Bigger & Bloodier’ Sequel

More horror movies using characters from old, unrestricted stories are on the way. Plus, a follow-up to the film is confirmed, and some new actors have joined the cast.

Filming has begun on Popeye the Slayer Man 2 in upstate New York. Daniel Baldwin and Avaryana Rose have joined the cast. The original Popeye the Slayer Man was one of three live-action horror movies based on Popeye released in the US in 2025, alongside Popeye’s Revenge and Shiver Me Timbers.

This new movie reimagines Popeye, the famous sailor, as a violent killer due to eating tainted spinach in a previous film. Driven by revenge after losing his home, he embarks on a destructive spree. The police, along with Popeye’s long-lost family, attempt to connect with the person he once was. Deadline has released a first look at the movie, which you can view here.

New Popeye Horror Sequel Promises to be ‘Bigger and Bloodier’

The first Popeye the Slayer Man movie told a story, but the upcoming sequel promises to be even scarier. Producer Jeff Miller says it’s bigger, bloodier, and features more intense action and a deeper look into Popeye’s history. He believes both fans of the original and new viewers will enjoy it.

Jason Robert Stephens is back as Popeye in the new movie, and several original cast members are returning, including Sean Michael Conway, Elena Juliano, Sarah Nicklin, and Nathan Todaro. Joining them are new actors Baldwin, who will play the mayor, and Rose as his daughter. Chelsa Gilson, Mia Rose, Derek Poole, and Jesse Wakeman are also joining the cast.

Robert Michael Ryan is returning to direct Popeye the Sailor Man 2, working from a script by John Doolan, who also wrote Remains. Jeff Miller (The Toyboy), Cuyle Carvin (Ouija Witch), and Ryan all contributed to the film’s story. The movie is a collaboration between several production companies, including Salem House Films, Millman Productions, Cloud 9 Productions, Babe Entertainment, Ron Lee Productions, and Otsego Media.

Popeye the Slayer Man Earned Mixed Reviews from Horror Fans

Lots of new movies have come out recently, and some are better than others. Popeye the Slayer Man, released by Vantage Media on March 21, 2025, in theaters and for streaming, received a mixed reaction. Currently, it has a 42% audience approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on over 50 user reviews, but hasn’t received a score from professional critics.

Okay, so I went in expecting the worst, and honestly, it was… surprisingly enjoyable! It’s definitely not a masterpiece, and it has its flaws, but it’s a genuinely fun watch, especially compared to a lot of the cheap slasher films out there these days. However, let’s be real – the story is practically nonexistent and the acting… well, it leaves something to be desired. It’s a guilty pleasure, for sure.

Popeye the Slayer Man 2 does not have a release date at this time.
