Henry Cavill’s Voltron Movie Had Several Setbacks
The actor best known for his role in The Witcher has been working a lot lately, and he’s a big fan of many different franchises. He’s been a gamer for years and loves 1980s pop culture, which led him to join the live-action Voltron adaptation when it was announced in October 2024.
Before finally getting made, the project struggled in development for many years. The live-action movie is based on the 1980s animated series Voltron, Defender of the Universe, and Hollywood had been trying to create a feature film version since July 2005. Over the years, numerous producers, writers, and directors worked on the remake.
Development of a live-action Voltron movie began in March 2022 with an official announcement and a story outline from director Rawson Marshall Thurber, known for films like Skyscraper and Red Notice. Amazon MGM Studios started discussing distribution rights the next month.
in October 2024, and things started moving along.
Who Stars in the Voltron Live-Action Movie?
The cast of the show features Henry Cavill as King Alfor, alongside Daniel Quinn-Toye as Keith, Sterling K. Brown as Zarkon, Rita Ora as Witch Haggar, and Nathan Jones as Super Soldier. John Harlan Kim, Alba Baptista, Samson Kayo, Tharanya Tharan, Laura Gordon, and Tim Griffin are also starring in currently unrevealed roles.
Voltron is about five robotic lions, each piloted by a different person. These lions can join together to create one giant, powerful robot named Voltron, who fights against evil forces.
Director Rawson Marshall Thurber has shared that the movie will remain faithful to the core themes and feel of Voltron while also featuring a fresh group of characters piloting the lions.
Besides the new Voltron series, Henry Cavill has several exciting projects in the works, including a remake of Highlander. Currently being filmed, the remake is directed by Chad Stahelski and features Russell Crowe, Dave Bautista, and Karen Gillan alongside Cavill.
He’s working on another project with Amazon, where he’ll be an executive producer and star. The series is in the very early stages of development. Like his previous work on Voltron, this new project, based on Warhammer 40K, has faced some challenges. The actor is personally reviewing the source material to ensure the project stays true to its roots and can move forward. He’ll also reprise his role as Sherlock Holmes in a new series of Netflix films.
Voltron is expected to premiere on Prime Video in 2027.
