Pee planet: Scientists discover distant planet with atmosphere that actually smells like urine

Recent findings from the James Webb Space Telescope are causing a stir online. Scientists have discovered that an exoplanet, located 12 light-years from Earth, has an atmosphere that surprisingly smells like urine.

That’s right! Recent data from the James Webb Space Telescope, analyzed in April 2026, revealed that the gas giant Epsilon Indi Ab has clouds similar to cirrus clouds on Earth, but made of ammonia – a chemical also found in urine.

Epsilon Indi Ab was first spotted in 2002, but its existence wasn’t confirmed until 2018. As an exoplanet – meaning a planet outside our solar system orbiting a star other than the sun – it’s a fascinating discovery for astronomers.

For over twenty years, scientists have been studying this large gas planet. Recently, they discovered clouds made of water ice in its atmosphere.

‘Piss planet’s’ pungent atmosphere goes viral

These clouds are like the high-altitude cirrus clouds we see on Earth, but they’re much more intense. Earth’s cirrus clouds are mainly made of water vapor, while the clouds around Epsilon Indi Ab have a much stronger composition.

Scientists initially thought this planet, similar to Jupiter, likely had a lot of ammonia in its atmosphere, which would give the air a strong smell of urine. It would be like walking outside and immediately smelling a very full litter box – unpleasant!

Although ammonia is still fairly abundant, observations revealed slightly less than anticipated when comparing the two planets.

Despite this, the internet quickly picked up on the information and spread it widely, with social media users already jokingly calling the planet Epsilon Indi Ab the ‘Piss Planet’.

Astronomer James Mang explained that being able to detect these things is a fantastic sign of how much progress we’re making with the James Webb Space Telescope. What used to be undetectable is now possible, letting us study the composition of these atmospheres and even look for clouds.

This shows our models are starting to understand more complicated details, allowing us to create even richer descriptions of these far-off, cold planets.

Epsilon Indi Ab is a large, gaseous planet orbiting a star that’s smaller and cooler than our sun, but expected to shine for a longer time. It’s often called a ‘super-Jupiter’ because it’s several times more massive than Jupiter, though it’s made up of similar gases.
