2026 marks the 30th anniversary of the iconic anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion, and the Japanese clothing brand GU is commemorating the occasion with a new line of retro-style T-shirts. Considered by many to be one of the best animated series ever made, Evangelion finished airing in 1996 but remains incredibly popular today, inspiring artists and gaining new viewers even now. Thanks to ongoing projects like video games, collaborations, and movies, Hideaki Anno’s groundbreaking work continues to thrive, and fans are excited to celebrate its legacy this year.
Watching Neon Genesis Evangelion was a really unique experience. It completely changed what I expected from giant robot anime. Instead of focusing on cool robots and battles, it delved deep into the characters’ feelings, their mental health struggles, and how past trauma affects them. The ending was definitely strange and confusing for some, but it didn’t diminish the series’ impact. It’s now considered a classic, and I can see why it inspired so many creators. You can really see its influence in shows like Serial Experiments Lain and Gurren Lagann, and even in Western animation like Rick and Morty and Steven Universe. It’s clear Anno’s work left a lasting mark.
Japanese Apparel Chain GU Releases Retro Evangelion T-Shirts for Series’ 30th Anniversary
I recently saw that GU, the Japanese clothing brand, is releasing a new ‘Evangelion’ collection. It’s a line of four vintage-style graphic tees inspired by the classic anime. What’s cool is each shirt has the Nerv logo on the back, and you can choose designs representing your favorite character – Shinji, Asuka, or Rei – or their iconic mechs, like Unit-01, Unit-00, and Unit-02. I noticed one red shirt has a quote from Episode 8, when Asuka first arrives in Japan. They’re really affordable at ¥1,990 (about $13) and come in a wide range of sizes, from XS to 3XL. They’ll be available in stores and online at the GU website starting June 22nd.
A new Evangelion anime is in development, confirmed in February. The project brings together a talented team: Yoko Taro (Nier) is writing, and Kazuya Tsurumaki – who assisted Hideki Anno on the original series – is directing, alongside Toko Yatabe (Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc, Darling in the Franxx). Animation will be handled by khara and CloverWorks, and the music will be composed by Keiichi Okabe, known for his work on games like Tekken and Drakengard, and anime such as Summer Time Rendering and Star Driver. A release date hasn’t been announced yet.
Players of the popular online game Final Fantasy 14 were surprised to learn that it will be teaming up with the iconic anime Neon Genesis Evangelion in a future update called Evercold. Details are still limited, but a raid based on Evangelion is planned, and players might even be able to unlock outfits inspired by the series’ plugsuits. This collaboration celebrates the 30th anniversary of Evangelion, and fans are now wondering what other unexpected partnerships might be coming to the game.
