GameStop CEO is selling Halo statues, rare games, and more to “pay for eBay”

Ryan Cohen, the CEO of GameStop, is trying to raise funds to potentially purchase eBay. He’s doing this by selling his own collection of gaming collectibles, sports cards, and GameStop merchandise directly on the eBay platform.

I was totally shocked to hear that GameStop is trying to buy eBay! They put in a proposal – it’s not a definite deal yet – but it’s worth around $55.5 billion. They’re offering $125 a share, paying with both cash and stock. It’s a pretty bold move, honestly!

When I first heard about the proposal, everyone online immediately started talking about how GameStop could actually pull it off. I mean, GameStop is way smaller than eBay, so it seemed like a huge question mark how they’d find the money to make the deal happen. It just felt like a really big ask!

Cohen announced on X (formerly Twitter) on May 6th that he’s selling items on eBay to cover the platform’s fees, and shared a link to his eBay shop.

Ryan Cohen’s eBay listings include GameStop signs and rare Nintendo games

Photos of Cohen’s online shop reveal a wide variety of items up for auction, such as GameStop signs, Halo memorabilia, classic Nintendo games, sports cards, and branded company merchandise.

As a collector, I was blown away by some of the prices I saw! GameStop store signs were going for over $11,000, which is incredible. And a Halo 2 Master Chief statue sold for more than $5,000! But the real shocker was a Ken Griffey Jr. rookie card graded a perfect 10 – it went for over $5,600. It’s amazing what people are willing to pay for these collectibles!

Alongside these items, people were also selling a Mario-themed NASCAR hood with the GameStop logo, a Vault Boy collectible statue, hard-to-find Nintendo and Game Boy games, and a collection of professionally graded baseball cards.

A screenshot of the online store revealed a message saying that each purchase came with a handwritten ‘Letter to eBay’ as a thank you to customers.

So, I got this letter from GameStop dated May 3rd, and it basically said they’re trying to buy eBay! Ryan Cohen also laid out his plans – he wants to cut costs and turn all our GameStop stores into places where they can handle shipping and make sure everything is legit before it gets sent out. Pretty interesting stuff, honestly.

The auction company is still considering the offer, but hasn’t made a decision yet.
