Audible opens first ‘bookless bookstore’ in New York

Audible has opened a unique pop-up space in New York City where people can simply relax and listen to audiobooks.

Audible recently announced a unique new space – a ‘bookless bookstore’ – designed to be a comfortable listening lounge and a gathering place for audio storytelling fans. It’s meant to offer a way to enjoy audiobooks and other content outside of just listening with headphones or devices.

This 6,000 square-foot space in New York City is open to the public at no cost. Throughout May, visitors can enjoy live events and special programs from Wednesday through Sunday.

The store’s features explained

The space feels like a record store, but instead of vinyl records, the shelves are filled with ‘Story Tiles.’ These small squares are a way to experience audiobooks through touch, according to Audible. When you place a tile on a listening station, it plays a sample of the audiobook through headphones.

The Gallery is a relaxed lounge area with couches and comfortable chairs where visitors can sit and enjoy the sounds. It also serves as a meeting space for events, presentations, and other programs.

The Dolby Atmos Lounge is a cozy, dimly lit room with comfortable seating where visitors can enjoy Audible Originals, many of which are narrated by famous actors and voice talent.

The Listening Bar features trained staff known as ‘Story Tenders’ who help visitors discover audiobooks they’ll love. Audible explains that these experts provide a personal touch to audiobook selection and discovery.

The event will feature a variety of fun activities, including trivia, live music, chances to meet your favorite creators, and hands-on workshops with brands like Crayola and Reading Rhythms.
