Season 5, episode 5 of The Boys is packed with funny cameos and guest appearances, connecting to both the show’s superhero world and broader, self-aware storytelling. The Boys stands out on television for its clever exploration of modern pop culture. Through parodies of famous superheroes from Marvel and DC, and references to the wider superhero movie landscape, the show on Prime Video playfully critiques the genre while still delivering a captivating story.

The fifth episode of The Boys season 5 builds on what’s come before. While the season is wrapping up and the team searches for someone who can defeat Homelander, the show remains true to its core identity. Titled “One-Shots,” the episode is structured as a series of separate, though related, stories focusing on various characters, and it’s packed with more self-aware humor than ever.

In the fifth episode of The Boys season 5, Homelander and Soldier Boy pursue V-One, tracking a former member of The Seven named Mr. Marathon to Los Angeles. This kicks off a series of cameos as the season’s final storyline unfolds, featuring plenty of familiar faces and inside jokes for fans of the Prime Video series.

Jared Padalecki

Jared Padalecki, famous for playing Sam Winchester on Supernatural, is now starring as Mr. Marathon. Interestingly, Jensen Ackles, who plays Soldier Boy in The Boys, played Sam’s brother Dean on Supernatural. Eric Kripke, the creator of The Boys, also created Supernatural, which is why he chose Padalecki for the role of the former Seven member.

Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, and Misha Collins shared 15 seasons together on Supernatural, so their recent reunion on The Boys was especially exciting for fans. On The Boys, the character Mr. Marathon is repeatedly mentioned as being incredibly fast. In season 5, episode 5, it’s revealed that he was the fastest man alive until A-Train beat him, ultimately taking Mr. Marathon’s place in The Seven.

Soldier Boy and Homelander visit Mr. Marathon, a huge Vought fan, hoping he might know the location of the V-One. As you’d expect from The Boys, things quickly descend into chaos, and Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles find themselves right in the middle of it.

Misha Collins

Misha Collins, known for his role as the angel Castiel in Supernatural, recently appeared at a party hosted by Mr. Marathon, a character in The Boys. In the show, Collins plays Malchemical, another individual with superpowers who has encountered Homelander. However, Homelander doesn’t recall their meetings. This marks another Supernatural actor making a cameo appearance in The Boys.

Fans of the show Supernatural will recognize Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles alongside Misha Collins in The Boys. Collins, who played the angel Castiel and often helped the Winchester brothers, brings a familiar face to the series. Even if you haven’t seen Supernatural, The Boys effectively uses Collins as Malchemical, a superhero secretly harboring resentment towards Homelander.

Seth Rogen

As previously hinted, Mr. Marathon is shown to be hosting a party attended by several celebrities playing themselves, such as Seth Rogen. Rogen often appears as himself in scenes from The Boys, a show he also produces. He first appeared in promotional videos within the show’s universe, advertising fictional films like “Black Noir: Insurrection” and “Translucent: Invisible Force.”

Seth Rogen made a brief appearance as a fan video chatting with Crimson Countess, before appearing in a later episode of The Boys (season 5, episode 5). In that episode, he was playing in a celebrity poker game when Homelander and Soldier Boy crashed the event, causing him to panic over the recent arrests of several famous celebrities.

Like other celebrity cameos in The Boys season 5, episode 5, Seth Rogen’s character meets a violent end when Mr. Marathon literally runs him through, splitting him in two.

Kumail Nanjiani

Kumail Nanjiani appears as a poker player at Mr. Marathon’s house in season 5, episode 5 of The Boys. Similar to Seth Rogen, he plays a version of himself, worried about the celebrities Homelander and Vought have captured. This actually marks Nanjiani’s second time acting in the world of The Boys.

As a big fan of The Boys universe, I found it interesting learning about Kumail Nanjiani’s involvement. He actually voiced a character named Vik in season one, episode four of the Diabolical spin-off. But that’s not all – he’s also made a couple of cameos as himself in the main Boys series! The first was in season three’s “Herogasm” – a hilarious scene where he’s singing John Lennon’s “Imagine,” which was a playful nod to a similar thing that happened online in 2020.

In season 5, episode 5 of The Boys, Kumail Nanjiani plays a member of Mr. Marathon’s team. His character tries to get other celebrities to publicly criticize Homelander and Vought, but this is presented as a satire of shallow celebrity activism. The scene concludes with Nanjiani making a humorous reference to his time playing a superhero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, jokingly telling a fellow actor that he’s become too muscular to be taken on as a protégé.

Christopher Mintz-Plasse

Christopher Mintz-Plasse, who often works with Seth Rogen, was also at Mr. Marathon’s poker game. He was seen chatting with the other guests about who might be chosen as a Starlighter, making a joke about the situation. Mintz-Plasse wondered if anyone considered Michael Cera for the role, especially since they’re both competing for the same part that Mintz-Plasse really wants.

The joke plays on the well-known working relationship between actors Bill Hader, Seth Rogen, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, and Michael Cera, which started with the hit movie Superbad in 2008. Rogen highlights their long friendship, saying, “We’ve been friends with him for 20 years, Chris.” Later in the sketch, a character suggests the celebrities will be paid for social media posts, leading to conflict. Will Forte

Will Forte makes what appears to be the last celebrity appearance in the fifth episode of The Boys season 5. Forte is a well-known comedian, writer, and producer, famous for his time on Saturday Night Live. His appearance on the show starts with a joke referencing this, as his character claims the best day of his life was when Vought killed Bill Hader, another comedian who first became popular on Saturday Night Live.

According to Forte, after Hader’s death, he started receiving roles only as a favor. He then attempted to gain favor with Homelander by falsely claiming he was the one who reported Channing Tatum. When Malchemical knocks Homelander unconscious, Forte immediately tries to escape, but Soldier Boy stops him and puts him in the path of Mr. Marathon, initiating the disturbing pattern of the Supe running through and killing celebrity guests.

Craig Robinson

In the fifth episode of The Boys season 5, there’s yet another unexpected celebrity appearance, following a series of earlier cameos. As chaos erupts inside the house, Soldier Boy attempts to flee Mr. Marathon’s property. Emerging from a bathroom is Craig Robinson, a well-known comedic actor who has worked with Seth Rogen before.

Before things get chaotic, Robinson playfully mentions Danny Trejo’s restaurant and then shouts, “Soldier Boy!” Just like Forte’s character, Soldier Boy then uses Robinson to shield himself from the incredibly fast Mr. Marathon. Following the deaths of Seth Rogen, Kumail Nanjiani, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse, the fifth episode of The Boys’ fifth season wraps up its run of funny, self-aware, and shockingly violent celebrity appearances.
