One Marvel Comic Can Explain Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom

The new movie is almost here, but surprisingly, fans seem less informed about it now than when it was first revealed. Although the cast is set and there’s been a lot of speculation, it’s hard to know what’s true and what’s just hype created for social media. As the Marvel Cinematic Universe moves toward the conclusion of the Multiverse saga and the upcoming Avengers: Secret Wars, there are many different ideas about what might happen next.

It’s interesting how often fans revisit the comics when they’re looking for explanations about what happens in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The MCU often borrows ideas from the comics, but rarely adapts them exactly. It seems Doctor Doom will be portrayed in a completely new way, and rumors suggest this version might be inspired by a recent comic book storyline that reimagined the character and his world.

Ultimates Issue 4 Gives Doom A New History

In July 2024, writer Deniz Camp made a notable claim on X (formerly Twitter). Known for his work on comics like Harley Quinn: Black + White + Redder, Absolute Martian Manhunter, and Children of the Vault, Camp is also leading creative efforts in Marvel’s Ultimate Universe. He’s overseeing titles including Ultimate Hawkeye, Ultimate Endgame, and Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion, as well as the core Ultimates series. As a playful way to promote an upcoming issue, Camp hinted it would be essential reading for anyone wanting to fully understand the character of Doom in Avengers: Doomsday.

While Al Ewing’s comments weren’t entirely meant to be taken literally, it’s unlikely Marvel Studios will directly adapt a recent storyline from The Ultimates. However, issue #4 of Ultimates, co-created by Ewing and Phil Noto, offered a uniquely insightful and compelling portrayal of a classic villain – a deeper dive into his motivations than ever before seen in comics. Considering Ewing’s talent and experience, it’s understandable why fans are drawing comparisons and taking this possibility seriously.

Issue 4 of the comic Ultimates explores the backstory of Reed Richards (from The Fantastic Four) in an alternate universe. The issue reveals a surprising twist: through the influence and torment of The Maker (another version of Reed Richards), he ultimately becomes Doctor Doom. This origin story reimagines one of Marvel’s most iconic villains, leaving him to question what should have been and realize he’s living in a reality created by a powerful, deceptive force.

There May Be Comic Book Parallels To The MCU’s Doctor Doom

As a big fan, I’ve been thinking about how the Marvel Cinematic Universe compares to the Ultimate Universe, and it’s actually pretty interesting! At first glance, it seems like the Doctor Doom we see in the movies isn’t connected to Reed Richards like some of the Ultimate versions. But when you look closer, there are definitely some similarities. The Ultimate Doom came from a different reality than the main Marvel one, and that’s exactly what we’re seeing with the movie Doom and the Fantastic Four – they’re from another dimension! It feels like both versions hint at a bigger multiverse story, and like Doom – or The Maker, as he’s known in the Ultimate Universe – is messing with powers he doesn’t fully grasp.

Beyond his origins, the question of who this Doctor Doom is remains. While he isn’t a version of Reed Richards, some believe he could fill the role previously held by Tony Stark. Marvel has stated Robert Downey Jr. will portray the definitive Doctor Doom, but this version simply has a different background – originating from a reality where he’s connected to Reed Richards. This doesn’t diminish his status as Doom, and with the existence of the Multiverse, we can expect to see even more versions of the character appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The version of the universe shown in The Fantastic Four: First Steps could be the same as the Ultimate Universe from the comics. It’s also possible that Doctor Doom is actually a version of Tony Stark, someone who realizes something is off about his reality. Issue #4 of Ultimates might be hinting at more than we think, and perhaps another Doom manipulated the MCU’s version of the character into becoming a villain. This other Doom could even be the main villain in Avengers: Secret Wars. While fans still don’t have definitive answers, these little clues suggest the story being told on screen will be excellent.
