A Stephen King series that began in 2025 will be back for a second season in 2026. This renewal is especially welcome news for fans, as it comes after another Stephen King thriller was canceled too soon. Though it’s still uncertain how the show will perform, its continuation is a positive sign for adaptations of King’s work.
2025 was a fantastic year for Stephen King adaptations. Most of the movies based on his stories that came out that year were well-received by critics. While TV adaptations of his books haven’t always been successful, the two shows that premiered in 2025 – The Institute and It: Welcome to Derry – both proved popular with audiences.
As a huge Stephen King fan, I’m really excited about what’s happening with adaptations lately! While we’re still waiting to hear if It: Welcome to Derry is definitely happening, the fact that MGM+ quickly renewed The Institute for another season is a great sign. They’ve even given it a release window of 2026, which feels promising. It makes me think we could be entering a new era of really good Stephen King TV shows and movies!
The Institute’s Return In 2026 Makes Up For The Outsider’s Cancellation After Season 1
Looking back, HBO’s The Outsider feels like a truly exceptional, though short-lived, series that raised the standard for adapting Stephen King’s work. Although it first aired as a limited series, there were plans for a second season. The actors and team behind the show were eager to come back, and Stephen King himself had approved the scripts for the potential new season.
Despite a promising start, HBO cancelled the show after just one season. The production company, MRC, tried to find another network or streaming service to continue it, but a second season of The Outsider never materialized. Had it been made, the show would have gone beyond the story told in the original Stephen King novel.
While both are based on Stephen King novels, MGM+’s The Institute is getting more room to develop than The Outsider did. Like The Outsider, The Institute could have effectively told its story as a limited series, covering the complete plot of the book. However, by expanding beyond the source material, the series has the chance to explore avenues that The Outsider wasn’t able to.
Other TV shows based on Stephen King’s work, like Under the Dome, have tried a similar strategy before. However, Under the Dome ultimately suffered because it went too far beyond the original story and became overly strange.
Let’s hope the next season of The Institute builds on the original story and makes it even better, rather than falling apart.
The Institute Isn’t As Good As The Outsider Yet But Has Immense Potential
Critics had a more varied reaction to The Institute than to The Outsider. The Outsider earned a high 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes, while The Institute received a more modest 64%. This difference likely stems from The Institute sticking closely to familiar horror tropes, whereas The Outsider successfully combined mystery and thriller elements with a touch of the supernatural.
While not one of the top Stephen King adaptations, The Institute had a promising first season. The show began to suggest a more intricate and thoughtful plot towards the end of that season, focusing on the difficult outcomes of predicting—and trying to alter—the future.
| Stephen King Show | Rotten Tomatoes Critics’ Score | Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score |
| The Outsider | 91% | 82% |
| The Institute | 64% | 69% |
The first season of The Institute ends by hinting at a much larger story to come, suggesting the institute itself is just the beginning of a bigger conspiracy. With many interesting storylines established in the Stephen King adaptation, season 2 has the potential to be more compelling and less predictable. If it succeeds, the next chapter of The Institute could be as strong as The Outsider.
