Nintendo and Sony have begun working on a live-action Legend of Zelda movie, but the director of Majora’s Mask believes the main character, Link, shouldn’t have any lines when the film comes out.
Wes Ball, the director of the Maze Runner films (which earned $950 million globally) and the recent Planet of the Apes movie, is directing the video game movie. He has a proven track record of successfully creating big, exciting adventures for audiences.
I’m so excited – they’ve officially started filming the Legend of Zelda movie in New Zealand! It was originally planned for March 2027, but now it’s coming out in May 2027. Still, that’s just a little over a year until we finally get to see Link and Zelda brought to life in a live-action movie – I can’t wait!
Takaya Imamura, the art director for the 2000 game The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, has a simple suggestion for the upcoming movie: the main character, Link, should remain silent.
Majora’s Mask art director is worried Link talking will ruin the “Zelda magic”

Benjamin Evan Ainsworth, known for his roles in “The Haunting of Bly Manor” and “Pinocchio,” has been cast as Link in the upcoming live-action “Legend of Zelda” movie. However, Takaya Imamura, an art director on “Majora’s Mask,” has expressed his wish that Ainsworth not have any lines in the film. Imamura shared this opinion while responding to fan reactions about the movie, following the success of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.”
Imamura, a key figure involved with the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Movie, expressed some concern on X (formerly Twitter) about Link speaking in the new Zelda movie. He worried that giving Link a voice might diminish the special, unspoken connection fans have with the character. He also responded to a fan who thought Link’s dialogue wouldn’t be significant, suggesting that while Link will speak, he’ll likely be a man of few words.
Link is well-known for being a silent character in the games. This design choice lets players interpret the story and develop their own emotional connection to it, rather than being told how to feel – though he does occasionally respond with simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ options.
For years, Zelda games haven’t explained why Link never speaks. However, a recent entry in the 2024 game Echoes of Wisdom suggests a reason: as a child, Link fell into a strange rift, and when he came back, he’d lost his voice. It’s currently unknown if this applies to all Zelda games, but it adds an intriguing layer to the series’ history.

Before photos of actor Evan Ainsworth as Link and actress Zelda Bragson as Zelda were published, director Wes Ball playfully responded to a question from Comic Book about whether Link would have dialogue in the movie.
He suggested offering viewers choices, similar to a video game. The movie could present options – A, B, or C – as pop-up dialogue boxes, letting the audience decide what happens next. He explained that, like the character Link in the game, the protagonist could interact with people without actually speaking, leaving the dialogue choices to the viewer.
Whether Link will speak in the upcoming Legend of Zelda movie remains to be seen. In the meantime, check out our list of the most exciting movies coming out in 2026.
