One of the most interesting parts of the Absolute Universe is seeing how familiar characters are reimagined in its darker world. This has led to some surprising transformations, with heroes becoming villains. A prime example is a new enemy of Absolute Wonder Woman, who was originally one of DC’s earliest and most iconic superheroes.
In Absolute Wonder Woman #18, written by Kelly Thompson and illustrated by Hayden Sherman, Wonder Woman continues her fight against a group of powerful magic users. This includes a version of Zatanna and a strange, fiery skeleton. This skeleton, who practices blood magic, was responsible for destroying Wonder Woman’s magical arm at the end of the last issue, and it was also discovered that he uses a similar form of backwards-speaking magic as Zatanna.
Diana fell back to regroup, but Zatanna pursued her all the way back to Diana’s base. To Diana’s astonishment, Zatanna lifted the magical block she’d previously placed on her. Instead of questioning why, Diana immediately continued fighting.
Who is the new Absolute Wonder Woman enemy?
After a short, tense moment, Diana and Zatanna were finally able to talk calmly. Although still upset, Diana understood that her magical protections would have prevented Zatanna from entering her home if she meant any harm. Zatanna apologized for magically restraining Diana, explaining she’d acted quickly to stop the conflict. She also revealed that the mysterious burning figure was actually her father, Giovanni Zatara.
Zatara, now famous as Zatanna’s father, has been a part of DC Comics for a long time. He debuted in 1938’s Action Comics #1, the very same issue that introduced Superman. Zatara is also remembered as DC’s very first superhero with magical abilities. Similar to Zatanna, he was a powerful magician who disguised his powers by performing as a stage magician, all while secretly defending Earth from evil forces and dark magic.
Zatanna thinks her father is being manipulated by Veronica Cale, just like she is. She wouldn’t help Wonder Woman fight him, but she agreed not to interfere. Wonder Woman, in turn, promised to spare Zatara’s life if possible. The story ends with a fight about to begin between Wonder Woman and Zatara, and it’s still unknown whether he’s working with Cale willingly or if he’s under her control.
Absolute Wonder Woman #18 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
