Warning! Minor spoilers ahead for ‘The Drama.’
Robert Pattinson and Zendaya are both incredibly busy with upcoming film projects, including a new movie called The Drama. The film, directed and written by Kristoffer Borgli, follows a couple – played by Pattinson and Zendaya – as they prepare for their wedding, but their relationship is threatened when secrets from their past are revealed. This is the first of two films they’ll appear in together this year; they’ll also be part of the all-star cast of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, alongside Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, and others.
With the movie set to premiere on April 3rd, early reports highlighted difficulties during production, especially for stars Pattinson and Zendaya, who relied on each other’s skills to deliver their best performances. Now, as the premiere date nears, personal issues between the actors have become public, which could create problems for the film’s global release.
According to TMZ, Tom Mauser – whose son was a victim of the 1999 Columbine High School shooting – expressed his disappointment with a plot point in the new movie, The Drama. In the film, Zendaya’s character, Emma Harwood, reveals to her fiancé that she once planned a school shooting but ultimately decided against it.
After losing his son, Daniel, in the Columbine school shooting, Mauser became a strong advocate for gun reform. He expressed his shock and dismay after learning a romantic comedy – even a dark one – had used a school shooting as a plot device. He found it deeply upsetting that the film attempted to make these events seem relatable or acceptable, especially considering his personal experience with such a tragedy.
Mauser didn’t criticize anyone for considering violence, but he urged those who’ve had such thoughts to seek help, like therapy. He also strongly objected to these kinds of events being used casually for entertainment.
I’ve been watching the trailers for The Drama, and they definitely hint at some intense stuff between Zendaya and Pattinson’s characters. But one scene in particular is getting a lot of attention from people who’ve seen early cuts – it deals with a really difficult subject, school shootings, and it’s understandably causing a stir. It’s a topic no one takes lightly, and honestly, I’m curious to see how it’s handled in the full movie. Knowing how dark the rest of the film looks, I think the audience reactions are going to be really telling. Both Pattinson and Zendaya seem to be aiming for a major success with this one, and it’s set to come out in 2026.
The Drama will debut in theaters on Apr. 3, 2026.
