Despite player interest in purchasing cosmetic items, the lead developer of the popular game Slay the Spire 2 has stated that the development team strongly dislikes the idea of using microtransactions.
Slay the Spire 2, a deck-building roguelike game, launched in early access on March 5th and became popular immediately. It attracted over 150,000 players on its first day, surpassed Marathon in Steam player counts, and has since peaked at over 500,000 concurrent players.
The independent game is off to a great start, even though it’s still in development. The game’s co-founder has promised fans that all future updates and content will be free.
Slay the Spire 2 devs won’t be adding microtransactions
I was so happy to hear in a Destructoid interview that the lead developer, Casey Yano, and the whole team are against adding microtransactions to the game. It’s awesome to know they’re prioritizing a good experience for players over squeezing out extra money!
I have to say, the developers are pretty upfront about not loving microtransactions, which is awesome! It’s funny though, because a bunch of their players actually threaten to buy every single cosmetic item they release, just to support them. It’s a weird situation, but I appreciate their honesty.

He’s doing this because he believes everyone should be able to access the information, not just those who can afford it. He doesn’t want to limit content with a subscription fee.
Yano explained that it’s crucial for all players to have the same game experience, because talking about the game’s content and making sure it’s balanced is central to what they do.
For PC gamers, Slay the Spire 2 will cost a one-time purchase of $25 to access the full game. However, the developer, Yano, has said that the game is still under development and currently lacks a lot of content, so it won’t be fully complete for a while.
Right now, we’re still figuring out what we’ll be updating frequently during early access, but ideally it will be new content – the really exciting stuff, we hope.
We don’t yet have a release date for Slay the Spire 2 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The developers have said they plan to eventually bring the game to all platforms, but for now, it will only be available on Steam while it’s still in early access.
