HBO’s new show, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a spin-off of Game of Thrones, has quickly become a hit with viewers. It’s reignited the passion for the franchise that was most prominent during the early seasons of the original series. The first season, consisting of six episodes between 25 and 30 minutes long, was highly praised, with each episode earning better ratings than the one before. Based on George R.R. Martin’s story The Hedge Knight, the show maintained strong viewership throughout its run, culminating in a season finale that drew the largest audience of any episode.
The season finale of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, titled “The Morrow,” drew 9.5 million viewers in the U.S. within its first three days, according to The Wrap. The episode followed the events of the previous one, which centered on the Trial of the Seven and Ser Duncan’s (Peter Claffey) initial battle experience. The show’s strong writing and fast pace appear to have kept viewers engaged, as the fifth episode already reached 9.2 million viewers – a significant increase leading up to the finale.
The finale’s viewership is particularly noteworthy considering the series premiere drew 6.7 million viewers across HBO and HBO Max. While those initial numbers were strong, the finale’s 42% increase demonstrates how deeply audiences connected with the show and its characters over time. Strong writing, directing, and a faithful adaptation of the source material clearly resonated with both longtime fans and new viewers. However, the finale’s numbers don’t quite reach the heights of Game of Thrones, falling just short of being among its top ten most-watched episodes. It also didn’t surpass the most popular episodes from Season 1 of House of the Dragon, the premiere of which alone attracted 10 million viewers.

As a big fan of the whole world George R.R. Martin created, I really appreciate how much respect A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms shows for his original stories. It would’ve been easy to make it as gritty and intense as Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon, but this series smartly leans into the lighter, more charming tone of the novellas. What really makes it work, though, is the fantastic chemistry between the two main actors, the really tight editing, and a score that’s beautiful without being over the top. It all adds up to something truly special.

It’s expected to premiere in 2027, and will be based on the second book written by George R.R. Martin.
