Well, that’s interesting! The trailer for Toy Story 5 just dropped, and it hints at a story that’s pretty critical of technology. While no specific brands are mentioned, watching it on a tablet might feel a little ironic.
The trailer begins with young Bonnie playing with the toys she received in Toy Story 3. She’s playfully imagining a wedding, but quickly loses interest when a new tablet, called “Lilypad,” arrives. The Lilypad immediately grabs Bonnie’s attention, and it mockingly tells the older toys that Bonnie needs something more modern. Fortunately, Woody returns – a little thinner on top – and teams up with Buzz to save the toys from being replaced by technology.
The new movie features the return of fan favorites like Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear, Tom Hanks as Woody, and Joan Cusack as Jessie. Joining them is Greta Lee, known for her role in Past Lives, as a character named Lilypad, and surprisingly, Conan O’Brien voicing Smarty Pants, a talking toilet! It raises the question: how can the original toilet toy compete with a new one that’s hosting the Oscars?
