Everyone experiences regrets occasionally, but Sam Raimi doesn’t have any about his latest project. The well-known director felt something was amiss and decided to fix it, resulting in a new horror thriller with Rachel McAdams and Dylan O’Brien that’s already proving to be a hit in theaters.
The project gave McAdams and Raimi a second chance, as Raimi felt he hadn’t given her a proper opportunity to showcase her acting talent. In a recent Total Film interview, Raimi openly admitted he was determined to make things right in 2026.
He explained that Rachel McAdams was ideal for the role because she’s a remarkably gifted actress. Having worked with her on Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, he was impressed by her talent and felt she hadn’t been given enough opportunities, so he made a point of wanting to collaborate with her again.
Send Help Shows The Dark Side of Rachel McAdams
Raimi went on to explain to let McAdams cook in ways audiences had never seen before.
He explained that this film presented a great opportunity because the actress is known for playing warm characters. The fact that she hadn’t previously portrayed a truly villainous role would create a genuine surprise for viewers. He emphasized that the film isn’t a mystery about who did something, but rather about the consequences and what happens after the event. The goal is to keep the audience constantly guessing and on edge, never knowing what will happen next.
Rachel McAdams, often known for playing cheerful characters, delivers a surprisingly dark performance as Linda Liddle. She intentionally subverts expectations: “She does the opposite of what you’d expect a good person to do—she’s unpredictable.” This was key to the character, transforming someone lovable into a truly villainous figure.
Overall, Send Help is a skillfully made film that delves into the darker aspects of the human psyche when pushed to its limits. Critics loved it, giving it a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a “Certified Fresh” designation, and audiences largely agree, with an 87% approval rating.
The movie, which came out on January 30th, is already considered one of the best currently playing in theaters. A big reason for this is that the director delivered on his promise to showcase Rachel McAdams’ range as an actress. She plays a character with a hidden darkness, and it’s captivating to watch her explore that complexity – you might even need to brace yourself!
