Ricky Gervais Reveals Jason Momoa Joke Cut From Golden Globes

For several years, the Golden Globe Awards and comedian Ricky Gervais were closely linked. Gervais was known for his brutally honest and often shocking hosting style at the awards show – Hollywood’s second most prestigious annual event. He hosted the ceremony in 2010, 2011, 2012, and again in 2016 and 2020, consistently surprising and sometimes offending the audience with his fearless humor.

Although he famously made fun of celebrities like Jennifer Lawrence, Mel Gibson, Charlie Sheen, and Sean Penn during his speech, the 64-year-old comedian decided to spare two stars from Game of Thrones: Jason Momoa (known for playing Khal Drogo) and Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister). He had actually written a joke about Dinklage before the event, but still chose not to deliver it.

Near the end of his new Netflix comedy special, Mortality, Gervais admitted he was worried about upsetting Jason Momoa, as reported by Variety.

I mentioned before that the Golden Globes have never stopped one of my jokes, and that’s true. But I just remembered a joke I actually stopped myself from telling – I got a little cold feet, probably being overly careful. I want to share it now. I’m introducing Jason Momoa, and I thought it would be funny to point out my own hypocrisy and cowardice. I’m comfortable making fun of actors – who’s afraid of actors? – but when it comes to someone big and intimidating like Jason, I definitely wasn’t feeling so brave.

According to Gervais, a friend of his ultimately dissuaded him from doing the bit.

I had planned a joke about the next speaker, saying he had a small penis, comparing it to a baby’s arm. I told a friend what I was going to say, and they asked if it could be seen as racist. I didn’t understand why it would be, explaining that my joke wasn’t about his race, but about his large size implying a disproportionately small penis.

I didn’t do what was suggested. I had a really good response prepared, so let me explain. Here’s what I was planning to say: I would have gone on stage and said I have nothing negative to say about the next presenter, because he’s well-endowed—in contrast to Peter Dinklage, who is not. I used a crude and offensive comparison to illustrate the difference in stature.

Ricky Gervais, known for his roles in Extras and The Office, had already prepared some jokes in case he hosted the 2025 Golden Globes. He shared on X (formerly Twitter) earlier this year that there was plenty of good material for jokes, and hinted at who some of the targets would be.
