HBO’s new series, Heated Rivalry, is getting a lot of attention, and fans are eager for Season 2. However, creator Jacob Tierney recently shared some frustrating news: new episodes probably won’t arrive until after 2026. HBO shows, like House of the Dragon and The Last of Us, often take a significant amount of time to produce, and this is true even for shows that aren’t as visually complex.
Tierney revealed the Season 2 update to Entertainment Weekly, explaining:
We anticipate the launch will happen relatively quickly – sooner than a year, and definitely well before 18 months. We’re working as efficiently as possible, but we’re committed to maintaining a high standard of quality throughout the process.
Look, as a huge fan, I get it – we’re all eager for the new season! But it’s a bit of a slow process because Tierney is doing everything – writing and directing. It’s a lot for one person! She actually said she hasn’t even started writing yet, but she will. They know we’re all waiting and want to get it out quickly, but they also want to make sure season two is really good, and that takes time, you know?
‘Heated Rivalry’s Surprising Success

Warner Bros./Crave
Based on Rachel Reid’s popular book series, Game Changer, Heated Rivalry tells the story of two competitive professional hockey players who find themselves powerfully attracted to each other. The series launched just last month and has quickly become a hit, earning a 97% positive rating and generating a lot of buzz.
The show prominently features a gay relationship, but some television and movie executives worry about alienating conservative viewers by making LGBTQ+ relationships the main focus. However, Heated Rivalry is expected to join other LGBTQ+ series that have proven popular with broad audiences. Even the show’s creator, Tierney, was surprised by the massive attention it received, as she told Entertainment Weekly when the series was renewed:
I wasn’t sure what to expect, but this is fantastic! I’m really grateful and excited. I generally prefer to let discussions unfold naturally rather than actively pushing them. I’m hoping we’ll have more meaningful conversations about the show once it’s released, so people can understand the full story and how it all connects.
All six episodes of Heated Rivalry Season 1 are now streaming.
