Last week’s Nintendo Direct brought a surprise for Dragon Quest fans with the announcement of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined, a remake of the popular PlayStation game from 2000. But Square Enix had another Dragon Quest reveal up its sleeve: today, they announced Dragon Quest Smash/Grow, a new mobile RPG. A closed beta test for the game will begin next month.
In Dragon Quest Smash/Grow, you battle large groups of enemies, defeating them to earn experience and better gear for your characters. As they get stronger, you can use special finishing moves to wipe out the remaining foes.
Dragon Quest Smash/Grow uses a system called Blessings to give each playthrough a unique feel. These Blessings are chosen randomly as you play, meaning every adventure will be different – a common feature in roguelite games. The Blessings you get during a run greatly impact how it goes, ensuring no two runs are ever quite the same.
Dragon Quest Smash/Grow is coming to both Apple (iOS) and Android phones and tablets. A limited beta test will run from October 14th to 21st. Interested players can sign up for the beta on iOS through TestFlight, on Android via the Google Play Store, or by visiting the game’s official website.
Square Enix has been steadily sharing news about its role-playing games lately. They recently confirmed that Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade will be available on the Nintendo Switch 2 starting January 22nd. Plus, they announced two other titles over the summer: Octopath Traveler 0 and The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales, alongside the upcoming release of Dragon Quest VII Reimagined and Smash/Grow.
