Seriously, if you’re like me and spend any time gaming on PC or consoles, you’ve probably noticed a ton of remakes and remasters lately. And it’s not just me thinking that – new research actually shows these updated versions of older games have been super popular, and people genuinely *want* to play them. They’re just fun diversions, apparently!
As a gamer, I found a recent study by MTM really interesting! They surveyed 1,500 players – half in the US and half in the UK – and it turns out a lot of us are into remakes and remasters. Apparently, studios are seeing that these updated versions are often *more* successful than the originals, but MTM’s Martin Bradley pointed out it’s tricky to pull off well – they really have to get it right!
MTM’s research showed that most players (85%) who bought a remastered or remade game hadn’t played the original version, suggesting their decision wasn’t just about fond memories. However, MTM also noted that nostalgia remains a strong factor, even when players realize they might be choosing familiar games over potentially more innovative new releases.
Finding remastered games hasn’t been a problem, as publishers are actively bringing back beloved classics alongside new titles. This year alone saw releases like The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, a huge seller, as well as Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4, and House of the Dead 2: Remake. And there’s more to come, with remakes of Persona 4, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, and Splinter Cell currently in development.
Nintendo has long understood how much players still enjoy its classic games. They’ve released updated versions of some before, but this year they’re doing something different: essentially rebuilding their older, unsuccessful Virtual Boy console.
Okay, so get this – they’re bringing Virtual Boy games to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pass on February 17, 2026! But here’s the catch: you’ll need a special new accessory, kinda like a stand, to actually play them. You slot your Switch or Switch 2 into it, and that’s how you experience the Virtual Boy games. It’s pretty cool, but definitely a unique setup!
