Production on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has finished, marking the end of the series. This means the show is wrapping up after five seasons, concluding the adventures of Captain Christopher Pike and his crew aboard the Starship Enterprise.
Paramount+ has ordered a fifth season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, but it will only have six episodes. This renewal came as season 3 premiered in June 2025. Production on the ten episodes of season 4 finished in July. Fans can expect seasons 4 and 5 to arrive on Paramount+ in 2026 and 2027, respectively.
It’s understandable why some viewers are confused about how quickly Star Trek: Strange New Worlds completed its first two seasons, particularly since fans waited two years for season 3. Adding to the concern, several actors from the show have announced on social media that they’re leaving, leading some to worry their characters might be killed off and what that means for the future of the series.
Those saying goodbye right now are finishing up work on the fifth and final season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. This means characters like Lt. La’an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong), Ensign Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), Scotty (Martin Quinn), and Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush) will be with the show until the very end.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Is Over For The Actors & Crew But Not For Fans
As a big fan, I’m glad to know that even though filming on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has wrapped for the cast and crew, we’re not quite done with the show yet! There are still 16 episodes coming to Paramount+ between seasons 4 and 5, and honestly, that’s fantastic news. It might not seem like a huge amount, but it’s definitely enough to keep me excited for more adventures!
While the actors who portray the crew of Captain Pike’s Enterprise might be finishing their roles, they’ll still be involved with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds for a while. The cast will continue promoting the show for the next two years, and they’re often invited to Star Trek conventions globally, where they’re always a big hit with fans.
Paramount+ Hasn’t Greenlit Star Trek: Strange New Worlds’ Captain Kirk Spinoff
The popular series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will conclude after its fifth season airs on Paramount+ in a few years. One potential continuation of the story could be a spinoff called Star Trek: Year One, which is being developed by the show’s executive producers, Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers.
Originally, Star Trek: Year One was planned as a series following Captain Kirk (Paul Wesley) and Spock (Ethan Peck) aboard the USS Enterprise. According to the creators, Strange New Worlds takes place very close to the beginning of the original Star Trek, and Year One would have filled the gap between that show and the classic episode “Where No Man Has Gone Before,” telling new stories in that timeframe.
Currently, Star Trek: Year One is just a concept, and it’s unknown if it’s been officially proposed to Paramount Skydance. Still, the new leadership at Paramount+ likely knows about Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers’ plan for Star Trek: Year One. Whether the show will actually happen, and if a new Captain Kirk series is part of Paramount Skydance’s future plans for Star Trek on television, remains to be seen.
Which Strange New Worlds Characters Would Join Star Trek: Year One
If a new show called Star Trek: Year One moves forward, the actors from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds – especially Paul Wesley and Ethan Peck – would need to renegotiate their contracts. Wesley has already said he’s eager to keep playing Captain Kirk.
Considering the established crew of Captain Kirk’s USS Enterprise in the original Star Trek series, here’s a look at which characters from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds would need to reappear in a potential Star Trek: Year One series.
| Strange New Worlds Characters Needed For Star Trek: Year One | Actor |
| Captain James T. Kirk | Paul Wesley |
| Commander Spock | Ethan Peck |
| Lieutenant Uhura | Celia Rose Gooding |
| Lt. Commander Montgomery Scott (Scotty) | Martin Quinn |
| Nurse Christine Chapel | Jess Bush |
Dr. Joseph M’Benga was a character in the original Star Trek series, and while he’s no longer the ship’s main doctor under Captain Kirk, actor Babs Olusanmokun could reprise the role if the planned series Star Trek: Year One moves forward.
The new season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds needs to show what happens to key characters like Una Chin-Riley, La’an Noonien-Singh, Erica Ortegas, and Pelia, and explain why they leave the Enterprise when Captain Kirk becomes captain.
If a second season of Star Trek: Year One isn’t produced, and no other project brings the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds cast back together, the actors’ time with the series will be over, though they’ll always be considered part of the Star Trek universe.
Fans can expect to see the Starship Enterprise again in seasons four and five of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds over the next couple of years.
