6 Times Fullmetal Alchemist’s Successor Proves Its Not Your Typical Shonen Anime

It’s been exciting to see Hiromu Arakawa back with a new series. While Daemons of the Shadow Realm could have simply offered fans more of what they loved from Fullmetal Alchemist, Arakawa and Bones Film instead chose to create a fresh and captivating story that feels unique and original.

I’m totally hooked on Daemons of the Shadow Realm! If you’re looking for a Shōnen anime with epic fights against seriously cool demons and characters you’ll actually care about, this has it all. But honestly, it’s more than just that – it really stands out. I keep getting surprised by unexpected twists and moments that just blow me away. It’s a really fresh and exciting take on the genre!

The Attack on Higashi Village Is Mind-Blowing

The attack on Higashi Village is shockingly violent and immediately establishes what makes Daemons of the Shadow Realm unique. Hiromu Arakawa, famous for the impactful event that begins Edward and Alphonse Elric’s story, created a different kind of horror – one that’s much larger in scope than what’s shown in Daemons of the Shadow Realm.

The story begins in a traditional medieval Japanese village, but this peaceful setting is quickly destroyed when the Kagemori clan attacks with shockingly advanced weaponry – guns, helicopters, and even demons. What follows is an exciting fight as Yuru must defend herself against these modern soldiers using only a bow and arrow.

The way the story carefully establishes Higashi village before its destruction immediately signals that Daemons of the Shadow Realm isn’t afraid to take risks and fully commit to them. This setup also creates an interesting dynamic, allowing us to see modern Japan through the eyes of a character raised in a medieval setting.

Asa and Yuru Have a Sibling Relationship That Puts Demon Slayer to Shame

Daemons of the Shadow Realm begins by highlighting the deep conflict between opposing clans. Even though twins Yuru and Asa want to rebuild their relationship and find common ground, their clans continue to fight, refusing to halt their long-standing war.

Asa and Yuru are very close siblings, but their families are locked in a conflict that threatens their relationship. It would be easy for their story to become a typical tale of warring siblings, with them instantly becoming rivals or partners, but their connection is more complex than that.

Unlike some stories, Daemons of the Shadow Realm doesn’t shy away from complicated relationships. Asa deeply loves her brother, and Yuru is fiercely loyal to Asa. However, when people close to Asa harm those close to Yuru, their strong connection faces a difficult challenge.

Daemons of the Shadow Realm Combines Pokemon with a Dark Fantasy

Stories and games featuring people paired with monsters – often fighting or going on adventures together – are popular. Daemons of the Shadow Realm explores this concept within a dark fantasy setting, but avoids overly bleak or violent themes.

Daemons are capable of extreme violence, both towards humans and within their own kind. However, they also develop deep and affectionate relationships with the people they serve. The story shows that masters who mistreat their daemons fail to unlock their full potential or earn their complete loyalty.

Despite being enemies, members of both the Higashi and Kagemori clans cherish their daemons. This shared compassion and ability to care for these powerful creatures adds a surprising layer of complexity to their long-standing conflict.

Yuru is a Hero and a Hunter

Yuru’s attack on the Kagemori clan in the parking garage is driven by his natural hunting instincts. The series begins by showing him successfully hunting a pheasant, highlighting his skills as a hunter and establishing it as a core part of who he is. This behavior surprises the other characters, who are more accustomed to city life and don’t expect such primal actions.

Yuru manages to break free after being ambushed by Jin Kagemori’s creatures. He then uses his own daemons, Left and Right, to destroy the lights in a parking garage before attacking Jin, slicing his legs and taking him captive. Haruo and Akio Kuroya are stunned by Yuru’s violent actions, but Yuru believes Jin won’t suffer serious injury.

Although stories about heroes are common, Yuru offers a unique and interesting twist. He’s a character with a medieval mindset about conflict who suddenly finds himself in modern Japan. It’s not simply his unfamiliarity with things like modern toilets – growing up in a secluded, old-fashioned village – but his entire way of thinking and handling situations that sets him apart.

Asa Killing Her Doppelganger Flips the Script

Asa makes a strong first impression by killing someone Yuru thinks is his sister. This instantly establishes a complex relationship between them, making Asa different from her brother. She acts as both an enemy and an ally to Yuru – she works against his plans but believes her actions will ultimately help him achieve what’s best.

Asa is driven by her desire to earn her brother’s love, and everything she does is focused on winning his approval. She launches an attack on Higashi village hoping it will lead to a family reunion, but this plan ultimately fails because Yuru finds it hard to trust the Kagemori clan after the incident. Asa isn’t simply good or bad; she’s a complicated person who genuinely believes her choices are correct and well-intentioned.

Gabby Chomps her Way Past Edward Elric Expectations

Gabby is a clever twist on what viewers might expect. She initially appears similar to the character Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist – with blonde hair, a red coat, and a comparable face. However, right away, Gabby establishes herself as her own unique person, even while acknowledging those initial similarities.

Edward Elric faced ridicule for blindly following military orders, and Gabby embodies what that might look like. Unlike Edward, who challenges authority and exposes wrongdoing, Gabby is completely obedient. She will carry out any order, no matter how terrible, due to her unwavering loyalty to the Kagemori family and especially to Asa.

Though she often seems cold and unforgiving, she has a personal code and won’t harm children. She actively protects Asa, even going the extra mile to ensure her safety by staying close to her at night. Gabby initially presents as friendly, then shows a ruthless side, before ultimately proving her loyalty – but all of these traits feel consistent with who she is.

With compelling characters and a unique storyline, Daemons of the Shadow Realm offers something different from typical action-adventure series. Arakawa’s latest work promises an increasingly complex plot with plenty of surprises as it unfolds. Expect to see more intriguing demons revealed, and the secrets surrounding Asa and Yuru’s family will continue to be exposed.
