Next month, the Nintendo Switch will get a brand new game with the release of Yoshi and the Mysterious Book. This colorful adventure sends Yoshi on a solo journey, marking the first new Yoshi game since 2019’s Yoshi’s Crafted World. Fans of the character, and those curious about the story, are eagerly anticipating this release.
After enjoying creating characters in Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream last month, some Nintendo Switch 2 players are looking forward to their next game. Yoshi and the Mysterious Book lets you play as Yoshi and help a friendly, talking book named Mr. E remember all the creatures inside. It looks like Bowser Jr. will also be making an appearance, and he’s likely causing trouble!
Unlike most games available on both Nintendo Switch and the new Switch 2, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is only playable on the newer console. While this means fewer people will be able to play it, it might convince those considering an upgrade to buy the new system.
Originally announced in a Nintendo Direct presentation in September 2025, the game is now scheduled to launch on May 21, 2026. Players can purchase it digitally or as a physical game cartridge.
The Story And Gameplay Of Yoshi And The Mysterious Book Is Somewhat Peaceful
When Yoshi enters the world of Mr. E’s strange book, the game transforms into a classic 2D platformer filled with power-ups, tricky challenges, and exciting rewards. But don’t expect this to play like a regular Super Mario game – it’s a unique adventure!
What I really love about this new Yoshi game is how different it feels from most platformers. Instead of being rushed by a timer or constantly worrying about dying, you just get to explore and hang out with the creatures around you! It feels a lot like Super Mario Wonder in how it focuses on fun and discovery, rather than just trying to beat the level. It’s just a really relaxing and enjoyable experience.
Since Bowser Jr. appears in the trailer and is said to be stirring up trouble within the book itself, we can expect there will likely still be some kind of conflict, even if it’s not traditional fighting – maybe clever challenges instead.
Yoshi’s Abilities And Attacks
Even though the game is generally calmer, Yoshi will still be a key character with exciting abilities. Game trailers have already given us a glimpse of some of the moves players can use when controlling Yoshi.
- Throw eggs
- Eat fruits or gather things to throw
- Flutter Jump
- Ground Pound
- Carry creatures on his back
- Observe to use traits and abilities
Yoshi’s new skills will help players solve puzzles, uncover hidden items, and explore the worlds within Mr. E’s book. Each level will feature a major goal or discovery, such as rescuing a creature or locating lost characters.
Is Yoshi And The Mysterious Book A Game Key Card On Switch 2?
The recent release of the Nintendo Switch 2 has sparked debate about the new Game Key Cards, leading some to question the value of buying physical game copies. While this is a complex issue, there’s some good news: even though games are available as digital-only downloads, you still have the option to buy them physically if you prefer.
Unlike some games that require a download code, Yoshi and the Mysterious Book has the full game data directly on the game cartridge. While updates and patches may still be downloaded, buying the physical version means you’ll actually own a complete copy of the game.
Price, Amiibo Options, And Pre-Order Information
You can get Yoshi and the Mysterious Book as a digital download for $59.99, or a physical copy for $69.99. It’s available for pre-order now at most stores that sell games. Unfortunately, pre-order bonuses are currently only offered in the UK. If you pre-order from the UK’s My Nintendo Store, you’ll receive a magnetic bookmark and a foldable tote bag, and there are also bundles that include a special Yoshi plush toy.
In Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, you can use compatible amiibo figures to earn special tokens. Using an amiibo once each day lets Mr. E give you a daily fortune, and the tokens you receive depend on that fortune. These tokens help you find hidden secrets in the game, though they aren’t required to finish it.
We’re not sure yet if using amiibo figures will unlock special rewards in the new Super Mario game, but the trailer featured eight that definitely work. These include all amiibo from Yoshi’s Crafted World, like Yarn Yoshi and Poochy, plus all other Yoshi amiibo. Bowser Jr.’s amiibo from the Super Smash Bros. series—the one of him in his flying machine—will also work.
Yoshi And The Mysterious Book Is Not Just For Kids
Although Yoshi and the Mysterious Book has bright, cheerful graphics and feels like a calming nature documentary, it’s fundamentally a puzzle platformer that’s designed for players of all ages. Like other Yoshi games and even Super Mario Wonder, it’s packed with secrets to find and challenges to complete. While kids will definitely have fun, adults shouldn’t dismiss it – there’s plenty to enjoy for everyone.
I’m really looking forward to discovering the secrets in Yoshi and the Mysterious Book when it comes out on May 21, 2026, for the Nintendo Switch 2.
