Wuchang: Fallen Feathers IP Has Been Acquired

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers was a surprisingly popular game on Steam, despite mixed reviews (I gave it a 3 out of 5). It quickly reached over 100,000 players, but that success didn’t last. Technical issues on PC and a controversial design choice – making important characters unable to be defeated – caused the game’s popularity to plummet.

The game lost nearly half its player base in a single week, a very worrying sign for a game meant to be played solo, and numbers continued to decline after that. It was a major failure, ultimately causing the game’s developer, Leenzee Games, to close down when employees didn’t want to switch to working as an outsourced team. This left the future of Wuchang: Fallen Feathers uncertain.

Wuchang Has Been Bought By Digital Bros.

Good news for anyone who was hoping to see more of Wuchang: Fallen Feathers! It looks like the game isn’t going anywhere. The parent company of 505 Games, Digital Bros, actually bought the rights to it completely. I saw the news over on PC Gamer – they paid $4.7 million for full ownership of the game’s IP, which is awesome! It means there’s still a chance we’ll see updates or even a sequel, which is a huge relief.

So, a game developed in China and set there is now owned by an Italian company – it’s not the most common situation, but definitely not unheard of in the gaming world. It makes sense that Digital Bros. would acquire Wuchang, considering the initial buzz it created on Steam. Plus, since their label, 505 Games, already published the game, it’s a natural fit for the game’s intellectual property.

Digital Bros. might think another company could do more with the Wuchang series, potentially leading to new games. Alternatively, they might hold onto the franchise tightly and not develop anything new for a long time. Both of these outcomes are quite common in the video game industry these days.
