The team at Creative Studio 3 knew they needed to impress at the recent Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival. Even if you don’t play the game regularly, you’ve probably noticed that XIV hasn’t been performing as strongly lately. While some players enjoy certain aspects, the current expansion, Dawntrail, has generally received a mixed reaction.
The recent buzz around Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold is because it’s expected to be a major change from the game’s current, somewhat stagnant state. It’s promising something completely different, and that’s generating a lot of excitement.

It wasn’t entirely surprising that the launch of Dawntrail faced some criticism. Following up on the highly-rated Endwalker storyline was always going to be a challenge. Many of the issues players are now raising actually started appearing during the Shadowbringers expansion and became more pronounced with Endwalker. These long-standing problems simply became more noticeable. The 8.0 update really needed to be a significant change from the generally cautious approach Final Fantasy XIV has taken since its relaunch with A Realm Reborn.
The game’s zones don’t feel very inviting, as there’s not much to do in them besides progressing the main story. The way the game handles gear and character progression currently discourages players from trying out different combat roles, even though Final Fantasy XIV is designed to let you play multiple jobs on a single character. This has led to concerns about each job feeling unique – and how the predictable pattern of powerful abilities every two minutes limited creativity in both job design and the design of challenging battles. Recent updates significantly changed many jobs, and unfortunately, those changes often sacrificed what made each job special in order to fit a system that players already knew wasn’t ideal.

Most of the previously raised concerns have been taken care of, and even more improvements have been made. The updated job system simplifies things by reducing unnecessary buttons, and the developers demonstrated how four jobs – Paladin, Dragoon, White Mage, and Bard – will feel in the new 8.0 version, giving players a preview of the changes. Traditional party-wide buffs are gone, which also means the old strategy of timing buffs every two minutes is no longer relevant. Now, players will focus on using their job’s unique abilities at the right moments, taking more individual responsibility. The combat system is also getting some interesting new elements – for example, Dragoon now has an ability that can reduce incoming damage by 90%, allowing them to occasionally help absorb powerful attacks if timed well.
By level 50, job kits will be almost fully equipped, making it much easier to play older content without feeling underpowered. Your best-in-slot gear level will apply to all your level 90 jobs, letting you jump into the latest challenges with any character. However, players who want to optimize their stats can still grind for gear on different jobs. The gearing system itself is getting a revamp with new weekly rewards and additional gearing options. Plus, a new difficulty level is coming to 8-player raids, offering a fresh challenge.

The upcoming changes seem set to dramatically reshape Final Fantasy XIV, potentially more than anything since the A Realm Reborn update. While many details are still unknown and won’t be revealed until Tokyo Fanfest, the initial impression is promising. It will be a long wait to see if the developers can fulfill these ambitious plans when Final Fantasy XIV: Evercold releases in January 2027 on PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, Mac, and PC. I think most players would agree this will be a particularly challenging wait.
