Why Ahsoka Season 2 Is Taking So Long

As a big fan, I, like many others, was really hyped after the first season of Ahsoka ended back in October 2023! That finale left us with so many exciting cliffhangers – Thrawn’s return and everything we learned about Peridea were huge! But honestly, the wait for season 2 is getting a bit frustrating. It’s been almost three years already, and it looks like we’re going to have to be patient for even longer. I’m still excited to see what happens next, but I really wish we had a clearer timeline for the new season!

I was so excited to hear Rosario Dawson share an update at a recent Disney event! It looks like we’ll finally get season two of Ahsoka on Disney+ in 2027. I know it was originally hoped for late 2026 – they started filming way back in April 2025! Long waits for new seasons are becoming common with streaming shows like Wednesday, Stranger Things, and Severance, but honestly, this feels like the longest Star Wars fans have ever had to wait for a show we know is happening. I’m trying to be patient, but it’s tough!

Other Star Wars series, like The Clone Wars, have experienced delays between seasons, but that show faced uncertainty after Disney bought Lucasfilm. While season 4 of The Mandalorian hasn’t been announced despite the 2023 finale, the story continues in the upcoming film, The Mandalorian and Grogu. Even Andor, which had a three-year gap between seasons, will return sooner than Ahsoka.

Many Star Wars fans are frustrated by the long wait for season 2 of Ahsoka and are eager to find out what’s causing the delay. While Disney and Lucasfilm are now focusing more on Star Wars films, like The Mandalorian and Grogu, and Star Wars: Starfighter, Ahsoka has been in development for years—the first photos from the new season didn’t appear until July 2025. Sadly, there’s a good reason why the show is taking so long to return.

Ahsoka Season 2 Suffered From Behind The Scenes Changes For Star Wars

The main reason season 2 of Ahsoka is delayed is due to a larger change in direction for Star Wars. Disney and Lucasfilm are now concentrating on films, particularly The Mandalorian and Grogu, which will essentially relaunch the franchise. Currently, Ahsoka season 2 is the only live-action Star Wars series being developed. Because of this shift in focus, work on the second season has been paused.

Although Ahsoka season 2 finished filming in April 2025, Disney and Lucasfilm chose to delay its release until 2027. This wasn’t due to production issues, but likely a deliberate strategy. The delay probably allows The Mandalorian and Grogu to have its moment without audiences feeling overloaded with Star Wars shows. Additionally, The Mandalorian and Grogu can establish important background information about the New Republic era, which is when Ahsoka is set.

Things have shifted since the first season of Ahsoka. Originally, Ahsoka was planned as a single, self-contained season, with the story continuing in a planned movie connected to The Mandalorian. However, that movie has been put on hold. Lucasfilm didn’t actually decide to create a second season of Ahsoka until January 2024, which caused delays in getting it made.

The production of Ahsoka faced a heartbreaking setback when actor Ray Stevenson, who played Baylan Skoll, unexpectedly passed away in May 2023. It wasn’t until January 2025 that Disney announced Rory McCann would take over the role. Finding and integrating a new actor for such a key character undoubtedly caused delays in the show’s production timeline.

Production issues and a shift in plans for Star Wars caused the second season of Ahsoka to be delayed until 2027. However, this delay means Ahsoka season 2 will be the first live-action Star Wars series to premiere in 2027 – a year that also marks the franchise’s 50th anniversary. The extra time also allows the season to connect more closely with the story of The Mandalorian and Grogu, which is exciting news for fans.

What To Expect From Ahsoka Season 2

Even though Ahsoka season 2 isn’t coming out until 2027, we have a pretty good sense of what to expect. The first season’s finale strongly suggests the story will focus on Grand Admiral Thrawn and his plan to rebuild the Empire, likely by uniting with surviving Imperial forces from The Mandalorian.

Ezra Bridger’s return to the core Star Wars galaxy means Grand Admiral Thrawn will face opposition not only from him, but also from the New Republic. It’s likely Ezra will team up with Hera Syndulla and others in the New Republic to try and stop Thrawn, though it’s possible they won’t succeed completely. Many believe Thrawn will be the primary villain in Dave Filoni’s upcoming movie, which connects various Star Wars series.

Okay, so Ahsoka and Sabine are still stuck on Peridea, but I think we’ve got a good idea of where things are headed. Baylan Skoll was so close to figuring out the mysteries of that planet, and I’m betting season two of Ahsoka will definitely pick up that thread – you know, his hunt for answers about the Force and those Mortis gods we first saw in The Clone Wars. Ahsoka will probably be focused on stopping Baylan, but she’s also gotta find a way off Peridea and back to help fight Thrawn. It’s a lot, but I’m excited to see how it all plays out!

The second season of Ahsoka could feature more appearances by Anakin Skywalker as a Force ghost. He might help Ahsoka and Sabine track down Baylan Skoll and thwart his plans. This season seems like a perfect opportunity to explore the idea of balance within the Force in greater detail. Ultimately, the future of the galaxy and the Force itself hangs in the balance, making the wait for season two even more difficult.
