Marshals Season 2 Gets Major Production & Story Timeline Update From Yellowstone Spinoff Star

Logan Marshall-Green, star of Marshals, promises the show’s second season will continue the momentum from the first season’s finale. Marshals, the first spin-off of Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe, has become a huge hit, averaging 26.5 million viewers weekly on CBS and Paramount+. It’s currently the most-watched series on broadcast television and across all platforms.

The next-to-last episode of Marshals season 1 hinted at big things to come for Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes) and his team in Montana. Kayce is thinking about selling East Camp, his home and the last piece of his connection to the Dutton family’s history with Yellowstone Ranch. At the same time, Deputy Marshal Pete “Cal” Calvin, played by Marshall-Green, shares some difficult news about his health.

Logan Marshall-Green recently told TV Insider that production on season 2 of Marshals starts this week, and he shared some exciting news. He says the new season continues the story immediately after the first season’s finale, which apparently ends with a surprising twist he didn’t expect. You can find his full comments below.

According to recent updates, filming for Season 2 of Marshals begins this week. The writing team is already working quickly, aiming to produce seven to eight pages of script each day. While the cast hinted at a dramatic cliffhanger at the end of Season 1, the new season will immediately continue the story, both in terms of plot and tone – there won’t be a time jump. Marshall-Green, one of the show’s creators, was surprised by the twist ending of the first season himself.

Good news for fans: production on season 2 of Marshals is starting quickly! CBS has announced that the show will return to its original Sunday 8 pm timeslot in fall 2026, and will once again air alongside the popular series Tracker.

Unlike streaming shows like the new Yellowstone spinoff, Dutton Ranch, the show Marshals moves at a very quick pace. They can film up to ‘seven or eight pages a day,’ which is a demanding schedule, as director Marshall-Green jokingly points out, meaning ‘there’s no time to relax!’

Logan Marshall-Green hinted that his character, Cal, faces an uncertain future. In the show, Cal shares with Belle (Arielle Kebbel) that he’s been diagnosed with a lung tumor, a condition that often affects military personnel. According to showrunner Spencer Hudnut, as shared by Marshall-Green, this storyline was something they specifically wanted to explore.

Season two of Marshals might feature characters from Dutton Ranch. Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser have hinted at a possible reunion between Kayce Dutton, Beth Dutton, and Rip Wheeler. However, Hauser has expressed a preference for filming in Montana, where Marshals takes place, rather than having Kayce travel to Texas for Dutton Ranch scenes.

Whether Pete Calvin will recover from his tumor and what that will mean for his future remains to be seen in season 2 of Marshals. However, it seems likely that Cal will continue to lead Kayce and the U.S. Marshals team for the foreseeable future.
