Most of your time in Subnautica 2 will be spent exploring deserted shipwrecks and gathering resources to build impressive bases. It’s a really captivating cycle of gameplay, and it’s easy to get completely absorbed for hundreds of hours without even noticing how much time has passed.
It was so simple to use, I actually forgot about the extensive Biomod system the game offers. I installed Dash and Sea Skimmer early in Subnautica 2 and didn’t revisit it until after I finished the main story.
If you’re reading this, you’re probably a skilled player searching for the rare Houndgar fish – it’s needed for the Chum Cloud Active Biomod. The problem is, Houndgars are really small, so finding one without a guide can take a long time. Let’s pinpoint exactly where they appear and how to catch them!
Houndgar Location

I looked through the Houndgar Databank and discovered that Houndgar always appears wherever you find Marrowbreach. I was fortunate to encounter my Houndgar, and now I realize it happened while I was being heavily bullied by a Marrowbreach – which explains a lot.
The Houndgar and Marrowbreach appear to have a mutually beneficial relationship. The Houndgar drives prey towards the Marrowbreach, and then feeds on the scraps left over after the Marrowbreach has eaten.
Okay, so here’s what I’ve figured out so far. Marrowbreach are all over the place – I’ve seen them patrolling around Camp One and east of the starting area. I even spotted a Houndgar just swimming around in the higher areas of the hot springs, so that’s a good spot to check. Honestly, the Marrowbreach are huge, so if you see one of those, a Houndgar is definitely nearby. It’s a good sign!
BioLab Station
After gathering Houndgar data, you’ll also need to collect data from Toxic Sponges to unlock the Chum Cloud Biomod. Luckily, these sponges are easy to find all around the starting area!
Okay, so after I scanned those two things, I went back to the Biolab Station, and finally got the Chum Cloud Biomod equipped! It’s awesome – every 20 seconds, I can let out this little green cloud of chum. It basically draws predators to me if I’m getting chased, which gives me a chance to either scan them or make a quick escape. Super handy!
If you enjoy scanning everything to fill out the databank, this mod is really helpful. Be careful in late-game areas – some fish, especially in places like the yellow chemical runoff in the far east, can cause a lot of damage.

You can also test this on Collector Leviathans to help you gather tricky data. The large creature in the image got wedged on a rock, so I had to help free it. Enjoy trying out different Biomods and discovering the ones that best fit how you like to play!
