For the past week, my social media has been flooded with strange celebrity appearances connected to Taco Bell and NBC Universal/Yum! Brands. I’ve seen Finneas with unusual eye patches, Ariana Madix on a purple carpet, and Benson Boone doing acrobatics to promote a new dessert. It turns out Taco Bell is launching its new menu with a celebrity-filled event hosted by Vince Staples, streaming on Peacock. With the Oscars happening nearby, it seems like a convenient time for stars to also participate in Taco Bell’s promotions.
Honestly, if someone told me the whole Live Más Live event was a cleverly disguised art project by Vince Staples commenting on modern society after his show was cancelled, I’d totally buy it. I’m amazed by the bizarre lines Taco Bell got celebrities to deliver. Benson Boone calling a Crème Brûlée Crunchwrap a “six-sided thirst trap” is a phrase I’ll never forget, right up there with Kim Catrall’s scatting or the “Adele Dazeem” moment. But despite all the spectacle – Benson Boone doing a backflip, Jason Sudeikis showing love for Kansas City, even finding forks in the kitchen – it all felt strangely formulaic. It was clear Taco Bell simply offered a lot of money to Ego Nwodim, Finneas, Devon Walker, Lil Jon, Doja Cat, and Ciara Miller from Summer House, and they all happily accepted.
Which celebrities were distracting from Taco Bell’s big announcements at the Live Más Live event? The fast-food chain revealed that Nacho Fries are now a permanent menu item, and they’re adding more crispy chicken nuggets. Our sympathies go out to Taco Bell’s fry cooks, who are about to get a lot busier! They’re also introducing dessert and Mexican-pizza empanadas – more work for the fryer, unfortunately. As for fun, limited-time items, Taco Bell is offering edible Fire Sauce packets and Mountain Dew Baja Blast under-eye patches. Apparently, the patches are meant to give you a caffeine and citrus boost around your eyes, helping you ‘live more’ with fewer wrinkles.
