Waymo responds as dozens of empty cars spend months getting stuck in a circle

Residents near Atlanta are experiencing problems with Waymo taxis getting repeatedly stuck going around in circles on a roundabout, at all times of the day.

In the 2020s, we started noticing that movies and TV often predicted huge advances in technology. While we haven’t quite reached the level of hoverboards, flying cars, or futuristic cities that were once envisioned, those predictions still capture our imagination.

Self-driving cars are becoming more common. Tesla’s Robotaxis are now operating in several cities across the U.S., and Waymo is expanding its service to multiple states, including a recent push into London, England.

However, self-driving taxis haven’t been perfect. People in northwest Atlanta have experienced problems with the vehicles frequently getting stuck and blocking their driveways.

Waymo cars keep getting stuck in Atlanta cul-de-sacs

People in the area have been telling WSB TV2 that Waymo driverless taxis are driving to their neighborhoods without anyone inside, and then getting stuck. Reports include the taxis going in circles around roundabouts and completely blocking off dead-end streets.

One resident explained that the issue is widespread throughout the neighborhood. They reported seeing around 50 driverless taxis pass through in a single hour, between 6 and 7 am. Attempts to deter the vehicles with a sign actually caused a problem, leaving eight Waymo taxis confused and unable to proceed.

A large group of driverless Waymo vehicles unexpectedly filled an Atlanta neighborhood and drove around a dead-end street for several hours, all without anyone inside.

They also said that it’s been going on for “months,” but has ramped up in the last few weeks.

Waymo explained to WSB TV2 that the problem stems from how their vehicles choose routes, and they are already investigating it.

Waymo is dedicated to being a responsible member of the communities it serves. The company has listened to local feedback and has already changed its routes to address concerns. Waymo reports that its service, which provides over 500,000 rides each week nationwide, is helping to lower traffic accidents and make roads safer.

We care about our connection with the people of Atlanta and are committed to ensuring a smooth, courteous, and secure experience for everyone who rides with us and lives in the community.

The company recently had to recall almost 4000 cars after they drove into flooded roads.
