continues to soar at the box office.
Antoine Fuqua’s new movie, Michael, tells the story of Michael Jackson’s incredible career. Jaafar Jackson plays Michael in the film, which has already been very successful. Since its release on April 24th, it earned $97.2 million in the US and over $217 million around the world during its opening weekend.
According to Deadline, the movie Michael has now earned over $604 million worldwide as of Tuesday. Of that amount, $353.8 million came from international audiences and $250 million from North America. Experts predict the film will make over $20 million during its third weekend in theaters.
With its latest earnings, Michael is nearing the record held by the 2018 film Bohemian Rhapsody, which grossed $910.8 million worldwide. Last week, Michael surpassed Elvis (2022)—the previous highest-grossing music biopic—which earned $288.6 million.
Despite largely negative reviews from film critics, Michael is proving to be very popular with regular moviegoers. While it only has a 39% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences have given it a strong 97% score on the site’s Popcornmeter.
The positive reaction from moviegoers is fueling Michael’s success and helping it maintain strong ticket sales each week. The film is predicted to return to more IMAX and PLF theaters this weekend, which should increase its earnings even further.
Whether the new Michael Jackson movie will be as successful as Bohemian Rhapsody remains to be seen. While Michael is currently performing better than Bohemian Rhapsody in the US, having earned $216 million domestically, Bohemian Rhapsody was a much bigger hit internationally, earning $687 million overseas.
