Two adventurers have broken the world record for the longest continuous journey by car, driving a three-wheeled vehicle over 14,000 miles (22,500 kilometers) through 22 African countries.
In October 2025, Ollie Jenks from England and his friend Seth Scott from Canada began a challenging journey to South Africa in a very unusual car. They chose a silver Reliant Robin, affectionately named ‘Shiela’, for their adventure.
Okay, so there was this little three-wheeler named Shiela, and honestly, Jenks thought it was a terrible choice for our big trip. He kept saying it had no power steering, no AC, and struggled with even the smallest hills – basically, it wasn’t exactly built for adventure! But, despite all that, Jenks, Scott, and I decided to take Shiela on a four-and-a-half month journey anyway. It was gonna be interesting, to say the least!
The adventure cost between $40,000-50,000
Shiela proved to be very unreliable almost immediately. Within the first two weeks, she needed new wheel springs, and shortly after that, the gearbox failed and the engine completely broke down.
Luckily, the team received strong support from their fans back home. Through crowdfunding, sponsorships, and generous fans, they were able to cover their expenses. People even arranged for replacement gearboxes and engines to be sent to Ghana and Cameroon. They also benefited from the kindness of strangers – on one occasion, Shiela was transported to a mechanic on a cattle truck thanks to a helpful local.
Traveling through certain countries became dangerous, and military protection was needed for parts of the route.
The team completed their trip in Cape Town, South Africa, and put Shiela on display. Visitors could see the damage she sustained – broken windows, bent rims, and a windshield covered in gasoline – as a testament to her journey.
