The Transformers franchise has seen many evil versions of Optimus Prime, particularly in its toy lines. Now, a company is taking another look at an older release that offered a unique take on the Autobot leader.
The Furai Model Shattered Glass Optimus Prime Ver. 2008 is a new model kit based on the Shattered Glass version of the character. It comes with lots of accessories and is highly poseable. The design features a darker look and takes inspiration from a classic toy line from the late 2000s.
Coming this summer, this new character is one of a rising number of menacing Autobot leaders, turning the famous phrase ‘transform and roll out’ into a truly intimidating battle cry.
Flame Toys Unleashes the Darkest Classics Optimus Prime Toy Yet

The new Furai Model Shattered Glass Optimus Prime Ver. 2008 figure is inspired by a version of Optimus Prime from the Shattered Glass storyline, where the roles of the Autobots and Decepticons are reversed – the Autobots are villains and the Decepticons are the heroes.
Instead of the usual red and blue, Shattered Glass Optimus Prime features a mostly purple and dark blue color scheme, designed to resemble Bizarro, the reverse version of Superman from DC Comics.
This model kit emphasizes the color scheme with green details, enhancing its menacing look. The non-transforming kit stands over 6 inches tall and displays the evil version of Optimus Prime in robot form – a design some longtime fans may recognize. This particular version of Optimus Prime was first released as a special exclusive toy at the 2008 Botcon convention, and it’s a recolor of the 2006 Transformers Classics Optimus Prime figure.
This action figure line was created by Hasbro as a modern take on the original Generation 1 designs, released before the 2007 movie. This new Furai Model figure is completely redesigned and features more than 45 points of articulation, letting you create dynamic battle poses. While the figure doesn’t transform, its included cannon and gun can connect to form a powerful backpack weapon.
He’s equipped with two small blades hidden in his wrist guards. He also carries an energon blade, which looks like it was inspired by the Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen movie, and a green energo-axe modeled after Optimus Prime’s axe from the original 1984 cartoon’s first three episodes. The armor based on vehicles can be detached, giving him an even sleeker profile.
This model kit also includes four different sets of hands, offering even more ways to customize it. The Furai Model Shattered Glass Optimus Prime Ver. 2008 is scheduled to be released in July – about 20 years after the original Transformers Classics line – and will cost $69.99 USD.
Beyond the villainous version seen in the Shattered Glass storyline, there are several other evil versions of the character. The most well-known is Nemesis Prime, a dark duplicate of Optimus created by Unicron, who first appeared many years earlier in that same movie.
This character is typically black and grey, but some versions use dark blue and grey to create a more unsettling look.
