The X account of famous actor Tom Holland, which has over 7 million followers, was recently hacked.

The attackers used his platform to promote a fake cryptocurrency and NFT scheme.

Fake ‘Spiderverse’ Partnership with Binance

An account that had been breached was employed to make public a collaboration between the global cryptocurrency platform Binance and the unveiling of “Spiderverse” tokens, as if they were going to be launched.

Users were lured to a false website through a provided link, promising early access to a phony SPIDER cryptocurrency and Spiderverse NFTs.

Followers’ initial snapshots showed alterations to Holland’s profile, specifically the addition of a false partnership site link in his bio.

An enigmatic selfie featuring a person with curly hair, possibly the hacker, emerged on the actor’s social media account. This image was accompanied by a caption that paid homage to a famous scene from the first Spider-Man film.

The post, originally attached to his profile, is no longer there. The cyberattack happening just as Sam Raimi’s 2002 Spider-Man movie came back to select cinemas on April 15 makes the circumstances even more mysterious.

Fans reacted in different ways to the incident, with some expressing relief that Holland’s involvement in the crypto scheme was likely just a publicity stunt, while others made light of the situation through jokes.

One person playfully lamented the lack of a hypothetical “Spider-Man 4,” while another was glad that the character’s fans didn’t have to worry about him being involved in a cryptocurrency scam.

Marvel’s NFT Initiatives

Marvel has explored the world of cryptocurrencies before, contrary to Tom Holland’s recent hype for “Spiderverse” being connected to this field.

Towards the end of 2021, AMC teamed up with Sony Pictures for an exclusive offer: Early bird ticket purchasers of “Spider-Man: No Way Home” received NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens). This innovative collaboration significantly boosted the film’s box office revenue, surpassing $1.9 billion. Consequently, it became AMC’s second-best single day in terms of ticket sales.

In the year 2022, AMC Theatres introduced an option for customers to purchase cinema tickets online with widely used meme currencies like Dogecoin and Shiba Inu.

New Zealand’s NFT business, VeVe, has teamed up with Marvel to introduce Spider-Man digital collectibles. This includes the initial Marvel comic published in 1939.

More recently, VeVe introduced digital comic books as NFTs showcasing popular Marvel characters such as Spider-Man and the X-Men. These innovative creations are driven by Ethereum technology.
