As a long-time fan of the show, I’ve seen some pretty wild things happen, so the Cigarette Smoking Man’s continued existence wasn’t totally shocking. My biggest issue is that the show just… never bothered to explain how he kept surviving! It leaves you wondering if they swapped him out with a double, if he was an alien all along, or if some kind of advanced tech was involved. Honestly, I’ve read a ton of fan theories trying to figure it out, but the one I saw on Reddit actually makes the most sense to me.
A Theory Explains Cigarette Smoking Man’s Impossible Survival
Reddit user AnaBastow thoroughly investigated how CSM could have survived throughout The X-Files, carefully considering and eliminating various possibilities until they arrived at a single, likely explanation. One common idea is that CSM wasn’t human at all, but rather an alien supersoldier – beings known for their resilience and ability to withstand almost any harm.

This is odd because if he was a supersoldier, the combination of magnetite and the explosion would have been fatal.
