Michael B. Jordan And Austin Butler Cast In Miami Vice ’85 Remake

just found its Tubbs and Crockett.

Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler are set to star as Ricardo “Rico” Tubbs and Sonny Crockett in Universal Pictures’ remake of the popular 1980s show Miami Vice, originally created by Anthony Yerkovich and executive produced by Yerkovich and Michael Mann. The new film, titled Miami Vice ’85, will be directed by Joseph Kosinski, who also directed Top Gun: Maverick, and filmed using IMAX cameras.

A new Miami Vice movie is in the works, aiming to recapture the feel of the original show’s first season from 1984. Like the series starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas, this film will follow two undercover detectives, and will showcase both the stylish side of Miami and the criminal activity underneath. Set in the mid-1980s, the movie is scheduled to begin filming in fall 2026. Dylan Clark and Joseph Kosinski will produce, with Dan Gilroy writing the screenplay based on the characters created by Yerkovich.

The new Miami Vice project arrives over fifteen years after the 2006 film, which starred Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell. While stars Jordan and Butler are involved this time, the previous movie didn’t make a profit, earning $164.2 million despite a $150 million budget. This new version is directed by Joseph Kosinski, who recently had huge success with the box office hits F1: The Movie and Top Gun: Maverick, offering a promising outlook. The announcement comes alongside reports that Kosinski may be too busy to direct another Top Gun movie, as he’s also committed to Miami Vice and a UFO thriller for Apple.

Following his Oscar win for Sinners – a performance that also earned him an Actor Award and a BAFTA nomination – Jordan is now starring in Miami Vice ’85. He’s also been directing and appearing in a new version of The Thomas Crown Affair for Amazon MGM.

This project will be another significant opportunity for Austin Butler, who first gained widespread recognition playing Elvis Presley in the 2022 film Elvis, a performance that earned him an Oscar nomination. He’s continued to star in major productions since then, including Dune: Part Two, the series Masters of the Air, and Darren Aronofsky’s Caught Stealing.

Miami Vice ’85 is set to premiere on August 6, 2027.
