Magic: The Gathering’s ‘Universes Beyond’ has brought some unexpected partnerships to the game. At the MagicCon Atlanta event, excitement for a new Secret Lair featuring Furby led to rumors of another collaboration. People spotted someone dressed as a Furby dancing with someone dressed as Kirby, sparking speculation about a possible Magic: The Gathering x Kirby crossover.
During the convention on Saturday, a Furby was displayed on a small dance floor when a fan dressed as Kirby unexpectedly joined in for almost half an hour. Wizards of the Coast assured TopMob that this was a spontaneous moment – a fan simply decided to participate in the fun while wearing a Kirby costume.

Despite this, rumors quickly started circulating on social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook, with people sharing pictures of the two mascots dancing together. Soon, comments appeared questioning whether Kirby might be coming to Magic: The Gathering. However, many correctly guessed that the people dressed as Kirby were just fans at a convention.
Nintendo could benefit from a collaboration with Magic: The Gathering, following a recent trend of video game franchises appearing in the card game. These collaborations often include new cards based on the video game’s characters. For example, the recent Final Fantasy set was the fastest-selling Magic: The Gathering set ever, and special card drops featuring Sonic the Hedgehog, Tomb Raider, and Street Fighter have already been released, all with unique card designs.
At MagicCon Atlanta, Wizards of the Coast revealed a collaboration with PlayStation. A special Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair set featuring themes from popular PlayStation games will be released on October 27th. The set will include cards inspired by God of War (both the original and Norse saga), The Last of Us Parts I & II, Uncharted, Ghost of Tsushima, and Horizon Forbidden West.
So, a partnership between Nintendo and Magic: The Gathering isn’t far-fetched. It could happen with a full expansion like Universes Beyond, or through smaller, limited-edition releases called Secret Lairs.
At MagicCon, announcements were also made about upcoming expansions planned for 2026, featuring popular franchises like The Hobbit, Star Trek, and Marvel Super Heroes. Additionally, special Secret Lair releases will be coming, collaborating with brands such as Jaws, The Office, and Furby, among others.
