They said you can run Doom on anything, and now you can play it on HOTAS in Stormworks

Stormworks: Build and Rescue is a standout sandbox game in a crowded genre. It’s a simple idea – build any vehicle you can imagine and use it to complete rescue missions in a vast open world – and that freedom alone keeps things interesting. But players weren’t content with just the base game! Remember when someone managed to fit the entire Shrek movie *inside* Stormworks? Now, another creator has taken things to the next level by adding the classic game Doom into the simulation.

Doomguy enters the Stormowrks base

It might seem a bit silly now, considering how often people ask if a device can play *Doom*. It’s been running on everything from smartwatches and Twitter to printers and even calculators! While many games now include *Doom* as a mod, it still makes me laugh – it’s a classic for a reason.

Citrus Doom, created by Waity5, is a complete recreation of the original Doom 1 designed to be played directly within Stormworks – it doesn’t require any additional modifications or add-ons.

To play Stormworks correctly, make sure you assign these keys on your keyboard: bind HOTAS buttons 7, 8, and 11 to the 7, 8, and G keys respectively. These bindings control the Plasma Gun, BFG 9000 (if installed), and the map.

Okay, so this game is packed – it’s got all 27 levels and 8 different weapons to play with. You can really mess around with the graphics too, like enabling floor rendering, all within the settings area. Just a heads-up, it runs smoothest at 35 TPS or better, so if your frame rate dips, things might get laggy, especially on the later, tougher levels. It’s a bit different because there aren’t any typical menus – once you leave the settings, you’re locked in! And if you wipe out? You’ll have to respawn your vehicle to keep going.

Players discovered it’s technically possible to run the game Doom inside the Half-Life: Alyx environment, even during a rescue mission. However, the mod’s creator advises against it, as it could cause the game to crash. While not everything fans hoped for is achievable, it’s still a remarkable feat.
