Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for The Boys season 5, episode 5, “One Shots.”
Throughout The Boys series, many characters have changed significantly, but Mother’s Milk has arguably transformed the most by season 5. As one of the original members of The Boys, he always had to be resilient and determined to take on their risky mission, while also often serving as the team’s voice of reason.
Mother’s Milk has always been willing to challenge Butcher and support Hughie and Annie when the team seemed to be going too far. That’s why it’s so surprising to see him acting so differently in season 5 of The Boys. He’s usually the one who keeps everyone united and motivated, but now he’s become negative and focused on just one thing.
The person who previously redeemed A-Train is now completely supporting Butcher, despite the risk that releasing the supe virus could kill Starlight, Kimiko, and even Butcher himself, along with many other heroic supes. It’s especially strange considering he saved Countess Crow not long ago, but now seems willing to let her die in order to defeat Homelander.
We initially thought his change in personality stemmed from his time at the Starlight internment camp, believing it had left him feeling hopeless. But in “One Shots,” MM revealed the real reason for the shift, and it’s even more heartbreaking than anyone imagined.
From the perspective of Terror, we saw interactions between different members of The Boys, but the conversation between Mother’s Milk and Butcher was particularly revealing. Even after almost killing each other during the fight at Fort Harmony, they still maintain a working relationship because they both want the same outcome. However, Mother’s Milk seems to be acting differently than he has in past seasons.
He explained his behavior after Butcher confronted him about eating chocolate he’d dropped on the floor – surprising, given his history with OCD. He also claimed he’s been sleeping surprisingly well, despite everything The Boys are going through, because he’s accepted he might die.
MM explained he’d accepted he might die and felt his family was better off without him. He said if he thought there was any chance he’d see them again, he’d be too afraid to follow through with what needed to be done.
It’s really sad to see how much his perspective has changed, particularly because MM has lost all hope for a positive outcome, and that doesn’t bode well for his future on The Boys.
MM’s Personality Switch Is A Bad Sign For His Chances Of Survival In The Boys’ Finale
As the show nears its end with only three episodes left, there’s a possibility Mother’s Milk could survive the finale, but his recent behavior is worrying. While The Boys has generally kept its main characters safe for five seasons, major deaths are expected in the last few episodes, making it unlikely everyone will make it through alive.
It seems likely that the heroes with stronger moral compasses will be the survivors, as it’s difficult to imagine a scenario where Butcher and a deeply troubled MM are left to mourn their fallen comrades, even if the ending isn’t happy.
Hughie, Starlight, Frenchie, and Kimiko all have personal motivations that make them cautious. Unlike them, MM seems to have little fear of death, possibly because he’s distancing himself from his family. This makes him willing to risk everything, even his life, to get revenge on Soldier Boy or defeat Homelander.
He’s proven he’s willing to confront even super-powered individuals, like when he took on Love Sausage without any powers of his own. However, attempting something similar against one of the more powerful members of The Boys would likely fail spectacularly. Unfortunately, it feels like a real possibility, because the original member of The Boys seems to have stopped thinking rationally and just wants the conflict to end.
This makes him easily influenced by Butcher, potentially leading him to participate in a dangerous, likely fatal, mission. I’m worried Mother’s Milk won’t survive the rest of The Boys. He thinks his family is a liability in his fight against the superpowered individuals, but so far, they’ve actually been a source of strength.
His determination to reunite with his friends and his careful, courageous choices have made him a key member of the group. Without those qualities, he risks becoming just a determined but powerless individual focused on defeating Homelander, lacking the strength to actually challenge him and his followers.
MM is easily one of my favorite characters on The Boys, and I’m really hoping he makes it through the season. But honestly, his recent change in attitude makes me think he’s in serious danger, and I expect a really suspenseful finale to season 5.
