The Real Reason Speed Racer Was A $93M Bomb Addressed By Star Ahead Of New Release

Almost twenty years after the movie Speed Racer didn’t succeed in theaters, its main actor believes he knows the reason why it flopped.

The 2008 movie brought the classic Tatsunoko Production anime to life with real actors. Emile Hirsch, known for his role in Call of the Wild, played the main character, a gifted young race car driver. The film was also the Wachowskis’ first directing project after finishing The Matrix trilogy, but it wasn’t as popular with audiences.

I was reading a recent interview with Emile Hirsch over at ScreenRant, and he was talking about how Speed Racer didn’t do so well at the box office when it first came out. He said it’s been amazing to see how people’s opinions of the film have changed over time, especially considering how harshly it was received back in 2008 – he felt like they really got torn apart! He thinks a big part of why it flopped was just the moviegoing climate at the time. Everyone was into different kinds of films, particularly those gritty, realistic superhero movies, and Speed Racer‘s bright, over-the-top style just didn’t quite fit in.

Emile Hirsch believes audiences are different now than they were 18 years ago. He feels that visual styles that once turned people off are now appealing, offering something fresh. Beyond that, he thinks the movie has a genuine heart and sincerity, qualities that are becoming less common in superhero films. According to Hirsch, ‘Speed Racer’ really delivers on that heartfelt and wholesome feeling.

I remember being at a special anniversary showing of the film at the New Beverly, and it was incredible. People were already sharing how much they loved it, calling Speed Racer a real cult classic! What really got to me was the ending – when Speed barely wins the Grand Prix, the whole theater was crying! It was so different from when it first came out in 2008, I think audiences just weren’t prepared for a movie that could hit you so emotionally back then.

Watching the audience react to the film in the theater was incredibly moving. That’s when it hit me – this was a movie people would cherish for years to come. It’s rare for a family-friendly film like ‘Speed Racer’ to have such a powerful emotional impact, and it proved that the movie’s success wasn’t just about the special effects, but the genuine heart and artistry behind it.

Since the release of the film, actor Emile Hirsch has openly talked about how poorly Speed Racer did in theaters, but also how it later gained a dedicated fan base. He’s often expressed surprise that it didn’t succeed at first, wondering why audiences didn’t understand their vision. He’s also compared its initial reception to the original anime series, which only lasted for three seasons – a relatively short run for a popular children’s show.

As Hirsch noted, the movie struggled initially because audience tastes were changing. The huge success of films like Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight and Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man proved that superhero movies were popular, and that viewers preferred stories that felt more realistic. The Dark Knight actually competed with Speed Racer in theaters, and the rest of the month saw it up against other big releases like Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian.

Speed Racer wasn‘t the only movie to underperform in theaters as audience tastes shifted. Many films, especially those in the superhero genre, tried and failed to match the massive success of The Dark Knight. Examples include the 2015 Fantastic Four reboot, several early films in the DC Extended Universe, and the 2014 RoboCop reboot.

Highly stylized films weren’t performing well in theaters at the time, although some later gained a dedicated following. Edgar Wright’s Scott Pilgrim vs. the World shared a similar visual style and energy with Speed Racer, but despite featuring a well-known cast and positive reviews, it didn’t succeed commercially, earning just under $48 million on an estimated $80 million budget.

Although Speed Racer wasn’t a hit when it first came out, that’s not the whole story of its impact. According to the director, the film’s sincere heart and memorable characters have continued to connect with viewers over the years. It’s now celebrated as a cult classic, and people talk about its enduring appeal far more than its initial failure – it’s even held up better than some other movies from that same period.
