The Octopath Traveler games are known for their beautiful, retro 16-bit style combined with modern HD-2D graphics. Each game features a team of distinct characters, each with their own personal story and abilities, who journey through rich worlds and engage in classic turn-based battles. The latest installment, Octopath Traveler 0, releases tomorrow, December 4th, but some players are concerned it may not be as good as the earlier titles.
Octopath Traveler 0 is almost here – But should players be worried?
Octopath Traveler 0 is a console and PC version of the mobile game Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent (2022), but it’s been significantly redesigned. It removes the random character recruitment system and in-app purchases found in the mobile version, letting you unlock characters through gameplay. This version boasts over 30 playable characters – the most in the series – and features a completely revamped story and combat system, delivering a full RPG experience designed for consoles and PC.
The game aims to feel like a fresh take on the original, not just a simple re-release. While it shares the same world and characters, it features a new story, how you build your team, and the overall speed of the game. However, some players are concerned it might play like a mobile game. Also, the Steam page for Octopath Traveler 0 doesn’t mention it’s based on Champions of the Continent, which is a bit strange and could hint at changes.
Just a heads-up: if you’re buying this game for Nintendo Switch, pay close attention to which version you choose. Square Enix wants to make it clear that the Switch version and the version for the upcoming Switch 2 are completely separate. If you buy the original Switch version, you won’t be able to upgrade to the Switch 2 version later, and there are currently no plans to allow that. Unlike many new consoles which offer affordable or free upgrades, you’ll need to choose your console now and stick with that version.
