When it came to Spider-Man joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, audiences already had strong ideas about the character because of the previous movies. Director Jon Watts intentionally moved away from the styles of earlier Spider-Man films by Sam Raimi and Marc Webb, choosing to highlight different parts of Peter Parker’s story.
While the way Marvel handled Tom Holland’s Spider-Man was successful in many ways and differentiated him from previous versions, it also meant the MCU missed out on something fans loved in the earlier Spider-Man films. Those movies – Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, and The Amazing Spider-Man – all featured scenes where the people of New York City rallied around Peter Parker to support him. This kind of moment really emphasized Spider-Man’s special connection to the city, but after ten years in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Holland’s Spider-Man hasn’t had a scene like that yet.
Civilians Aided Spider-Man Before the MCU
In the first Spider-Man movie, a key moment happens on the Queensboro Bridge. As Spider-Man struggles against the Green Goblin, people start throwing anything they can find at the villain to protect him and stop him from hurting Spider-Man, who is holding onto a falling tram. One person famously yells, “You mess with one of us, you mess with all of us!” This echoes a similar scene in Spider-Man 2. After Spider-Man saves a runaway train, the passengers stand between him and Doctor Octopus, refusing to let the villain get to the exhausted hero.
While not as effective as the citizens who helped on the bridge – Doc Ock’s tentacles quickly moved them aside – the attempt was still a kind moment. This scene didn’t appear in Spider-Man 3, but The Amazing Spider-Man continued the tradition. Badly injured after battling the Lizard, Peter could barely swing through the city, but crane operators stepped in, positioning their machines to create a clear path to Oscorp Tower.
The scene in The Amazing Spider-Man was particularly impactful because the crane operator helping with the rescue was someone Spider-Man had saved earlier in the movie. While these contributions from everyday citizens were small, they highlighted Spider-Man’s positive influence on New York City, motivating people to help others, especially someone who risked everything to protect them. These moments helped the films maintain a sense of hope, even amidst challenges.
New York City is Key to Spider-Man’s Identity
Although Spider-Man is incredibly powerful, he’s often considered a “street-level” hero, like Daredevil or the Punisher. This is because he’s deeply connected to the people and problems of his city. He cares about even the smallest issues, which is why he’s known as the “friendly neighborhood” Spider-Man. While many Marvel heroes operate in New York City, Spider-Man is one of the few who truly embodies its spirit.
Whether it’s in movies, comics, or other stories, Peter Parker often doesn’t get the recognition he deserves for his heroic acts. That’s why it’s so satisfying when the people he protects occasionally show their gratitude. However, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, this connection is only half-formed. While Peter consistently helps ordinary people – like in the energetic action sequence in Spider-Man: Homecoming – he rarely receives help or support from them in return.
The new Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie is looking to move the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man closer to the classic character fans know and love. This includes giving him a costume that’s very faithful to the comics. A great way to show Spider-Man’s new direction and honor previous films would be to include a scene where everyday New Yorkers come together to support him, reminding audiences of what made them Spider-Man fans in the first place.
