After a strong debut, HBO Max is bringing back IT: Welcome to Derry for a second season. Andy Muschietti, the director of the IT movies based on Stephen King’s novel, recently shared some exciting news about what’s coming up in the new season.
On Sunday, director Andy Muschietti shared an update on the development of IT: Welcome to Derry Season 2. He confirmed that writers are currently working on the season’s story and promised fans of Stephen King’s 1986 novel will find plenty to enjoy. While the series is a prequel, Muschietti and his team are drawing inspiration directly from the book, allowing them to flesh out characters who were only hinted at in the original story and expand the show’s overall mythology.
Muschietti says they’re currently working on the 1935 storyline and enjoying the process. For those familiar with the source material, the Bradley Gang will likely ring a bell. This group of bank robbers was traveling through Derry when they stopped for ammunition, and a terrible event occurred.
Director Muschietti explained that Stephen King drew inspiration from a 1930s event in Maine. The fictional ‘Bradley Gang’ in the story is based on the real ‘Brady Gang,’ a group of robbers who were publicly executed in Bangor, Maine. Muschietti stated that the story’s central violent event will center around the downfall of the Bradley Gang.
Director Andy Muschietti has shared plans for the IT: Welcome to Derry TV series, envisioning it as a three-season arc. Each season will explore a different time period. The first season is set in 1962, nearly three decades before the events of the first IT movie. The second season will go back to 1935, and the third is planned for 1908. This will allow the show to delve into the history of the Kitchener Ironworks factory explosion – an event mentioned in both the original novel and the first IT film.
According to Muschietti, Season 3 will feature a major event – the destruction of the Kitchener Ironworks. He describes it as a large explosion happening during an Easter egg hunt, tragically resulting in the loss of many children. He confirmed this event is a key part of the story, though he used strong language to emphasize its impact.
He explained that Season 2 is exciting because it’s set during the Great Depression, a time that completely changes the world the characters live in. Unlike typical stories about kids in safe suburban neighborhoods, this season takes place in 1935, a time of real hardship. People were very poor and just trying to get by, which will make the story and the environment very different.
