People are noticing Justin Theroux’s extremely dark tan in the new movie, The Devil Wears Prada 2. The film is doing well in theaters and mostly revisits familiar characters from the original, but it does introduce some new faces. Theroux plays Benji Barnes, a ridiculously tanned and somewhat foolish tech billionaire who is now dating Emily (Emily Blunt) after a divorce and leaving his ex-wife, Sasha (Lucy Liu), with a fortune. He’s trying to buy Runway magazine – the film’s version of Vogue – as a gift for Emily. Many viewers have pointed out the similarities between Benji and Jeff Bezos, especially since rumors circulated that Bezos wanted to buy Vogue for his wife, Lauren Sánchez-Bezos, after she graced its cover. However, the screenwriter, Aline Brosh-McKenna, claims the character wasn’t based on Bezos. She told Variety they already had a script when the rumors surfaced and found the coincidence amusing.
Whether intentional or not, the movie’s portrayal of a character resembling Jeff Bezos is perfectly timed. Currently, Bezos and his partner are facing intense scrutiny regarding their ties to the fashion world. As co-chairs of tonight’s Met Gala – sponsored by Amazon – their involvement has sparked some controversy. Sources suggest Meryl Streep might skip the event because of Amazon’s sponsorship, and the activist group Everybody Hates Elon is calling for a boycott. Ultimately, all this attention will likely boost the already highly anticipated sequel to The Devil Wears Prada, so Jeff Bezos is inadvertently helping the film industry.
