The DCU’s New R-Rated Movie Setup Proves Just How Far DC Has Come

A leading actor in the DC Universe recently talked about the possibility of making another R-rated movie, and the fact that it seems likely shows how much the franchise has evolved. While DC has created some truly great superhero films, not every movie based on its characters has been successful throughout its long history.

DC is known for making some of the most famous, gritty superhero movies, but surprisingly, many of its biggest hits have been lighter in tone. For example, Aquaman earned over a billion dollars worldwide. Even DC films with darker themes generally avoided becoming explicitly mature or R-rated.

The DC Universe’s current direction, which allows for both mature, R-rated content and family-friendly stories, is particularly noteworthy and promising. It creates opportunities for on-screen narratives that previously seemed impossible, a point recently emphasized by a key actor in the franchise.

Jason Momoa’s R-Rated Lobo Movie Hopes Show Just How Far DC’s Films Have Come

With Jason Momoa set to play Lobo in Supergirl, fans are excited about the character’s role in the DC Universe. When Collider’s Steve Weintraub asked Momoa about Lobo’s future – and the possibility of a standalone movie – the actor shared his thoughts:

I really want to make a mature, R-rated Lobo movie, and I have no plans to create a PG-13 version. I’m open to Lobo appearing in other films if asked, but if I’m making a standalone movie, it absolutely has to be R-rated.

The DCU appears well-positioned to explore more mature content. With R-rated projects like season two of Peacemaker, Creature Commandos, and the planned Clayface series already in the works, and a growing focus on lesser-known DC characters, it seems increasingly likely they can successfully incorporate darker themes and stories.

This really shows how much DC has changed in recent years. Before the launch of the DCU, James Gunn already started making R-rated DC movies more acceptable, with films like Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad leading the charge. This new approach is now setting the stage for the DCU to explore a wider variety of tones and ratings in its films.

With a growing openness to include characters like Lobo, and a focus on highlighting lesser-known heroes in series like Lanterns and Supergirl (and hints of more to come), the potential future of DC movies is dramatically different from what was originally planned.

DC’s Upcoming Releases Paint A Truly Promising Picture For The Franchise’s On-Screen Future

The DC movie lineup for 2026 looks very promising, showcasing the potential of the franchise with a diverse range of films. The two movies planned for that year, Supergirl and Clayface, are a great example of this variety – Supergirl will be a fun, family-friendly sci-fi adventure, while Clayface is intended as a more mature, R-rated horror film.

Looking ahead, DC has a diverse lineup of upcoming releases. Season 3 of My Adventures With Superman begins in June, followed shortly by the second season of Batman: Caped Crusader, a continuation of the spirit of Batman: The Animated Series. The darker, live-action Lanterns series will premiere sometime after Supergirl, and Batman: Knightfall Part 1 will debut at the Annecy film festival this June as well.

With so many different approaches being taken with DC’s characters, it feels like anything is possible for future movies and shows. The franchise seems open to a lot of creativity, and many more characters – like Lobo, or even completely new ones – could easily get their own films or series within the main DC Universe, as long as their stories are compelling.
