It’s hard to believe, but it’s been a full decade since Blizzard released Overwatch, and it really redefined what hero shooter games could be. Anyone who remembers the online gaming world in 2016 knows just how incredibly popular this game became!
Wow, it’s hard to believe it’s been ten years! This game feels totally different now. They dropped the ‘2’ and went back to what made it special, but it’s changed a lot since 2016 when it actually won Game of the Year over huge titles like Uncharted 4 and Titanfall 2. People still argue about that win sometimes, but you have to admit, Overwatch really made a splash back then and changed things up for the whole industry.
Overwatch has a large and ever-changing group of characters – over 50 now, compared to the original 21 – making the game more complex and exciting. We’re taking a look at the top 10 heroes currently dominating the game, from well-known favorites like Tracer and Zarya to newer additions like Emre and Kiriko.
This list isn’t in any particular order and reflects the current state of the game after the updates to Overwatch Season 2. Keep in mind that abilities are subject to change in the future!
10. Tracer
Cheers, Love!
Even after a decade and with many other heroes now available, Tracer is still the most recognizable face of Overwatch and remains a top choice for damage-dealing players.
Thanks to her signature Blink and Recall skills, she remains a top-tier flanking hero in both regular and competitive games. She’s great at quickly jumping behind enemy lines to create chaos and deliver a lot of damage at once. This can give her team the chance to break through the enemy’s defenses, but it works best when everyone coordinates their attacks.
Tracer is a very strong hero with few weaknesses when played well. She excels at quickly maneuvering around larger heroes like Reinhardt and Orisa, effectively countering them. She can also swiftly target and eliminate vulnerable enemies, such as a Mercy caught out of position. Even after years in the game, she remains a difficult opponent to deal with.
9. Lucio
Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop
Lucio is a highly experienced hero who’s currently playing exceptionally well, and many consider him the best support character in the game. He truly embodies the meaning of ‘support’ – showing that simply healing a lot of damage isn’t the only way to help your team succeed (a lesson some Genji players could use!).
Putting the fun aside, his real strength depends heavily on good teamwork. After a recent improvement, many players are saying his Speed Song is incredibly powerful, but only when their team knows how to use it effectively.
This song now gives a 15% boost to attack speed, and that speed triples while Lucio uses his ultimate, “Amp It Up.” With good teamwork and communication, Lucio can turn a teammate into a devastating force! If you’re playing with a coordinated team that uses voice chat, Lucio is a hero you should always consider picking.
8. Reaper
Not Even the Grave Can Hold This One
Reaper is a divisive hero because of his unique abilities, but he’s still a very dangerous opponent and arguably the best at stealth in Overwatch, even better than Sombra.
He’s now considered one of the best heroes thanks to recent updates that have made his abilities more reliable. Specifically, he now has built-in abilities that automatically activate at key moments, and his escape moves recharge very quickly. This gives experienced players more consistent ways to engage and finish off opponents from a safe distance.
He’s a master of waiting in the shadows, slowly building up power before unleashing a devastating attack that can turn the tide of a match. He’s fantastic to have as a teammate – especially on maps where the objective is to escort a payload – but incredibly frustrating to face as an opponent. Even now, the sound of his approaching footsteps sends shivers down my spine.
7. Orisa
Don’t Let Her Cute Face Fool You
After countless revisions – we’ve honestly lost track! – Orisa is now the most reliable and powerful tank in the game.
What’s great about this hero is that she’s easy for beginners to pick up, but incredibly powerful for experienced players. She consistently deals a lot of damage throughout the entire match, and her Energy Spear is a real asset. It’s fantastic for pushing back tough opponents or creating space for your team in chaotic fights.
Orisa’s biggest weakness is that she relies on teamwork and struggles to win games on her own without a dedicated support player. If you notice a Mercy consistently focusing on healing and protecting an Orisa, you should prioritize eliminating Mercy right away. Otherwise, that pairing can be extremely difficult to defeat throughout the match.
6. Emre
The Hitscan King
Man, it was such a relief when Emre finally dropped! He came with the launch of Season 1 in early 2026 – they finally ditched the ‘2’ in the game’s name, thank goodness – and after a few adjustments to make him just right, he’s become my go-to for reliable damage. Seriously, he’s the best hitscan hero out there, in my opinion!
He’s so successful mainly because of his grenades. They’re unpredictable and often lead to surprising knockouts. The trick is to bounce them off walls and objects to catch opponents off guard. Honestly, even skilled players often just throw them into groups and hope for the best – and it usually works!
I’m seriously impressed with his Ultimate! It’s like he becomes this super-charged Pharah, soaring through the air and raining down fire on anyone below. When he hits you from a direction you don’t expect, or when his team coordinates with him, he can completely turn the tide of a fight. He’s a real game-changer, honestly!
5. Kiriko
Trust in the Kitsune Spirit
Kiriko often appears to have a lower win rate in Overwatch stats, which causes a lot of discussion among players. But the truth is, she’s incredibly strong in competitive, high-skill games and is a key pick for professional players alongside other support heroes.
Her Protection Suzu is the primary reason for her strength, remaining a top-tier support ability in the game. It can remove almost any negative effect, shorten cooldown times, briefly make the target untouchable, and increase their speed, all while also healing them. This healing is even more effective if a negative effect is successfully removed.
Okay, so you hear about some abilities and think, ‘That HAS to be her Ultimate!’ But with Kiriko, it’s not! It’s actually her regular skill. And her Ultimate? Seriously strong. She summons this spirit fox that creates a path for my whole team, boosting our attack speed and letting us use our abilities way faster. Honestly, if someone knows how to play Kiriko well, you need to watch out!
4. Ana
A Mother Knows Best
If you need a support hero who can actively help lead the attack, Ana is still the best option, but Zenyatta is a very close second. He can provide strong damage amplification with his Discord Orb and also offers effective healing.
Ana’s strength comes from her Biotic Grenades. These grenades can quickly heal allies, but they also prevent enemies from receiving any healing. A recent update shortened the time it takes to use the grenade again, from 14 to 12 seconds, letting players be more proactive and aggressive with their tactics.
Ana can quickly eliminate enemies with a straightforward combination: she reduces the healing on an enemy tank, alerts her team, and then watches as the tank is easily defeated. However, she’s a challenging hero to master because she heals by accurately shooting a sniper rifle, requiring a high level of skill to perform well under pressure.
3. Illari
The DPS in Disguise
Is that a support? No! Is that a DPS? Also, no! It’s Illari.
Sorry for the quick detour, but it’s hard to talk about this hero without mentioning that initial reaction. When she was released, players joked that Blizzard had just created another damage-dealing character and called her a “Support” – and that’s actually a big reason why she’s so effective today.
Illari is incredibly powerful and can single-handedly win ranked matches if you’re a skilled damage dealer. This makes her a top pick for team compositions that need both strong damage and lots of utility. Some players believe she was intentionally created to attract damage and tank players to the support role – her pylons provide consistent healing with minimal effort, freeing you up to focus on eliminating opponents.

Even though she was designed to assist teammates, this character is a refreshing change because she’s surprisingly capable of winning fights on her own.
2. Mauga
Pure Chaotic Power
It took Mauga a bit to become popular among Overwatch players, but he quickly became a favorite for those who enjoy playing tank heroes. You’re almost guaranteed to encounter him in any ranked match, as he’s played very frequently.
I just love playing this hero because he feels like the ultimate tank – seriously, the raw power he brings is unmatched! People joke that you can basically just click and hold to win with him, and you know what? They’re not far off. It’s incredibly satisfying to just feel that much dominance in a fight.
Mauga is built to be a straightforward, powerful damage dealer. While he’s attacking – particularly other tanks – he heals quickly, making him incredibly hard to take down. He’s currently one of the most formidable and physically imposing heroes in the game.
1. Zarya
The Powerhouse
Currently, the way Overwatch is balanced often gives an advantage to tanks that can move quickly or directly defeat other tanks. Because of this, Zarya has become one of the strongest tanks in the game.
Zarya uses bubbles to protect herself and gain power. If left unchecked, she can quickly become incredibly strong and overwhelm the opposing team. A fully charged Zarya is especially effective against tank heroes who depend on projectile attacks or weaker shields – think Ramattra, D.Va, Winston, and Reinhardt. It’s a scary thing to face!
In addition to her bubble ability, her health also includes a regenerating shield, letting her play very aggressively. She can quickly engage, fall back for a few seconds to heal, and then rejoin the fight – and that kind of bold, frontline presence is what makes a truly effective tank.
When facing Zarya, the best strategy is to either quickly eliminate her with your team’s combined fire, or completely ignore her. Randomly shooting her shields will just let her build up power and become a huge threat.
