Spy thrillers have long been a favorite among moviegoers, offering intense and exciting stories. From James Bond to Jack Ryan, these films consistently deliver thrilling experiences for audiences.
As a huge fan of spy stories, I’ve noticed that Hollywood has really been digging into the classics lately – especially those amazing book series! We’ve gotten so many films and now streaming shows based on them over the last thirty years. And I’m thrilled to hear that one of the all-time greats is finally coming to streaming just as summer hits in 2026 – it’s perfect timing!
Fans can now stream The Hunt for Red October on Paramount+ starting May 1st. The film, starring Sean Connery as Marko Ramius, is based on the popular 1984 Tom Clancy novel. Originally released in movie theaters on March 2, 1990, it was directed by John McTiernan and written by Larry Ferguson and Donald E. Stewart.
The movie The Hunt for Red October earned over $200 million at the box office, despite only costing around $30 million to make. Although several actors have since played Jack Ryan, Alec Baldwin was the first to portray the character on film, alongside Sean Connery. The movie also featured strong performances from Tim Curry as Dr. Yevgeni Petrov, Scott Glenn as Commander Bart Mancuso, and James Earl Jones as Vice Admiral James Greer.
Considered a classic spy film from the 1990s, The Hunt for Red October won an Academy Award for Best Sound Effects Editing and received nominations for Best Film Editing and Best Sound. After its popularity, several follow-up movies were made before the series was restarted in 2002 with a new cast led by Ben Affleck.
Viewers new to the film will discover a thrilling spy story, and The Hunt for Red October continues to be critically acclaimed. Currently, it holds an 88% approval rating on both Rotten Tomatoes and its user-based Popcornmeter.
The popular Jack Ryan series is returning in 2026 after a break of almost three years. John Krasinski, who starred in the Prime Video TV show that ended in 2023, will once again play Jack Ryan in a new movie, Jack Ryan: Ghost War, which comes out in theaters on May 20th. Several familiar faces from the TV series, like Wendell Pierce, Michael Kelly, and Betty Gabriel, will also be in the film.
Catch The Hunt for Red October on Paramount+ in the United States.
